...it had been strictly prohibited; however, it had come to be heard that such occurrences had taken place from time to time in recent years. Therefore, after due investigation, a circular notice (mawashijo) was issued stating that the ringleaders as well as those who had conspired to instigate and sustain such disturbances would be dealt with severely and punished accordingly.
Item: On the twenty-seventh day of the first month, at Tentokuji Temple, from the evening of the preceding twenty-sixth day through the morning of this day, a memorial service (hōji) marking the hundredth day after the death of Lady Tokushōin was conducted in advance (otorigoshi).
Note: Although the second day of the second month was the proper date, since the Shogun's New Year congratulatory ceremonies (nenga nooshūgi) were scheduled for the first day of the same month, the service was held in advance.
Item: On the twenty-eighth day of the same month, following the precedent set by the previous lord, five salted cod (shiodara) were discreetly offered to the Ōgoshō (Retired Shogun). In connection with this, a letter was attached and sent via a foot soldier (okachi) to the household of the Shogun's chamberlain (sobashū), Ogasawara Iwami-no-kami (Masato), from the domain's Edo caretaker (rusuiyaku) Tsuda Kuemon (Moriyuki).
Item: On the twenty-ninth day of the same month, as the Shogun was making a pilgrimage to Zōjōji Temple, after his return, the Edo caretaker Yokota Sakudayū (Naomichi) was dispatched to the castle as a messenger to inquire after the Shogun's well-being; he was received in audience by the Inspector (metsuke) Kamio Ichibei.
Note: As the practice of dispatching a messenger to inquire after the Shogun's well-being following each pilgrimage to Zōjōji thereafter became a standing practice, it will not be recorded hereafter.
Item: On the same day, for the same reason, an inquiry letter (ofumi) was sent for the first time from the inner quarters (naishō) of the domain to the senior ladies-in-waiting (rōjochū) of the Main Keep (Honmaru) to inquire after the Shogun's well-being.
Note: For both Tōeizan (Kan'eiji Temple) and Zōjōji Temple, after each pilgrimage and the Shogun's return, a letter was sent... (text continues)
