英語訳

The above matter was submitted as an official notification (Otatasho) to Hanabusa Kan'uemon and Iida Shirōzaemon in the eighth month of Genroku 9 (1696), the year of the Rat. First Month Item: On the nineteenth day of the first month, regarding matters that had not been resolved by the written directive (Okakitsuke) issued last winter, it was declared that an inquiry should be made to Tokugawa Gyōbu-kyō (Muneyori). In response to this, the chief retainer (Karō) Honda Yahara (Masa■), who had traveled from the home domain, arrived at the Tokiwabashi residence on the eighteenth (the previous day), and today appeared together with chief retainer Okabe Mikinosuke (Nushisada) before the Senior Councilor (Rōjū) Hotta Sagami-no-kami (Masaaki) to offer the said expressions of gratitude. The retainers who were present here in Edo last winter were summoned and informed of the contents of the written directive. These contents have been conveyed in detail to the home-domain retainers of Ogimaru, who have duly acknowledged and respectfully accepted them. We are most grateful for this gracious circumstance. Accordingly, since the home-domain retainers wished to convey their gratitude for the above, and as Honda Yahara traveled to Edo as their representative, he has come to pay his respects. First Month Chief Retainer to Matsudaira Ogimaru Honda Yahara Item: On the twenty-third day of the same month, upon notification from Senior Councilor Hotta Sagami-no-kami (Masaaki), chief retainer Okabe Mikinosuke (Nushisada), middle retainer (Chūrō) Akashi Shūzen (Kifusa), and the household administrator (Yōnin) Daidōji Magokurō (Shigeyuki) — three persons in total — each carrying one silver horse-fare token (Ginbashiro), appeared before Sagami-no-kami, and were granted an audience. (The request for an audience with Sagami-no-kami had been made on the nineteenth of last month.) Item: On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, a notice was issued by the Ōmetsuke (Grand Inspector) regarding the matter of peasants from private domains throughout the country who had gathered in large numbers at the castle towns or jinya (regional administrative offices) of their lords to file petitions (訴訟, soshō) concerning the collection of annual tax (nengu), or requests related to food provisions (fujiki) and seed loans (tanegashi)...
