(Continued from previous page) ...a letter was to be sent to inquire after the Shogun's well-being, as had been requested by the senior ladies-in-waiting (rōjochū) of the Main Keep (Honmaru). Item: As the practice of dispatching an inquiry letter (ofumi) to inquire after the Shogun's well-being following each pilgrimage to Zōjōji Temple thereafter became a standing practice, it will not be recorded hereafter. Item: Even when the Ōgoshō (Retired Shogun) or the Dainagon make pilgrimages, an inquiry letter is not sent. Item: On the first day of the second month, on the occasion of the Shogun's fortieth birthday congratulatory ceremony (nenga), the Edo caretaker (rusuiyaku) Tsuda Kuemon (Moriyuki) was dispatched as a messenger to present one arrangement of fresh sea bream (azedai hitoorisame). (Notice of this had been issued on the twenty-fourth day of the previous month.) At the castle in the Hinoki-no-Ma chamber, Shogun's Announcer (sōjaban) Kutsuki Tosa-no-kami (Genkō) received the messenger in audience. Item: On the second day of the same month, having been summoned by the Senior Councilor (Rōjū) Hotta Sagami-no-kami (Masasuke), the Edo caretaker Katō Chōemon (Masatoshi) appeared before him. On that occasion, a petition (ukagaisho) had previously been submitted requesting permission to conduct prayers (kitō) at Sannō Shrine on the occasion of the Shogun's birthday congratulatory ceremony, and to present one set of ceremonial box offerings (hakosakana) along with an amulet (ofudamori) from the inner quarters (naishō) of the domain. Today, through an attached reply slip (tsukefuda), instructions were received that the offering should proceed as requested. Note: In accordance with the above instructions, a request was sent to Sannō Kanrian'in (the official Buddhist temple affiliated with Sannō Shrine) for the prayers and amulet; these were presented on the thirteenth day of the same month. Item: On the same day, at Unshōji Temple, from the evening of the previous first day through the morning of this day... (text continues)
