(Continued from previous page) ...as this matter had been communicated through official channels, Lord Sagami-no-kami's chief steward (yōnin), Kuratsugu Jindayū, conveyed that the petition should be submitted with an official seal (ingyō). Accordingly, the newly made seal of the 23rd day of the 3rd month of this year was duly used [to submit the petition]. Item: 19th day of the 5th month — As the Sentō [Retired Emperor's Palace] had previously announced the passing of the Retired Emperor on the 8th day [of this month], a messenger was dispatched to Kyoto to offer condolences: the Captain of the Vanguard (osaki bugyō), Higashi Shingorōemon (Sukehari), departed Fukui today. Note: Shingorōemon arrived in Kyoto on the 23rd day of the same month. Item: 22nd day of the same month — At the summons of the Duty Senior Councillor (goyōban), Lord Hotta Sagami-no-kami (Masaaki), the Fukui domain's Edo Residential Officer (orusuii), Tsuda Kuōemon (Moriyuki), attended upon him, whereupon the official letter (hōsho) bearing the joint signatures of the Senior Councillors (rōjū) was handed over. [Contents of the hōsho:] Concerning the stone wall below the outer embankment on the eastern side of the moat adjoining the south gate of the Third Enclosure (sannomaru) of Fukui Castle in Echizen Province — one section having partially collapsed and partially begun to bulge outward, reconstruction works are hereby ordered. Furthermore, concerning one section of the moat on the northern side of the Outer Enclosure (sotokuruwa); one section of the moat from outside the Takegahana Gate of the Outer Enclosure to outside the Jizō-waki Gate; and one section of the moat from outside the said gate to the northern side outside the Koumadashi Gate — all of which have become silted up, dredging works are hereby ordered. We have duly noted the intent of the red markings on the submitted map, and in accordance with your petition, the works to restore these structures to their original condition on a continuing basis are hereby authorized. Respectfully submitted.
