**[Date and Signatures of the Reply Letter]**
Twenty-seventh day of the Fifth Month Mitsutuna (Lord Yanagiwara-Dainagon)
Michie (Lord Kuga-Udasho)
To: Lord Matsudaira Ogimaru
---
One: On the first day of the Sixth Month, in the same manner as before, the messenger Higashi Shingorōemon (Sukeharu), accompanied by Arakawa Sukeemon, the Kyoto Resident Official, delivered ten pieces of silver as a condolence offering to Sennyūji Temple (the order having been issued on the eighth day of the previous month). The following day, the second, Shingorōemon departed Kyoto.
Note: Shingorōemon returned to Fukui on the sixth day of the same month.
One: On the sixth day of the same month, a memorial service was held at Tōeizan (Kan'eiji Temple) for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the death of Lady Jōen'in (the birth mother of Lord Yūtoku'in [Tokugawa Yoshimune]). To express condolences to the Kubō-sama [the reigning Shogun, Tokugawa Ieshige] and the Ōgosho-sama [the retired Shogun], a box of arrowroot powder (containing fifteen bags) was presented via messenger Katō Chōemon (Masatoshi), the Resident Official (the matter having already been approved on the second of the same month).
One: On the ninth day of the same month, for the same occasion, the messenger and senior retainer Sakakibara Sukezaemon (Shigebusa), wearing formal long *hakama*, accompanied by Resident Official Yokota Sakudayū, presented one piece of silver as a condolence offering before the spirit altar at the main hall of Tōeizan Temple (the matter having already been approved on the second). The *shittō* [officiating monk] announced the offering, after which Sukezaemon performed his bow of reverence and withdrew.
Note: Messengers from the Three Gosanke Houses, other domain lords, and the Senior Councillors (*rōjū*) also delivered offerings before the spirit altar and performed their bows as described above. On this occasion, the Senior Councillors' messengers wore short *hakama*.
One: On the fourteenth day of the same month, it was reported [to the imperial court] that the condolence offering to Sennyūji Temple, made on the first of the month in connection with the demise of the Sentō, had been duly completed. (Continued on next page)
