御家中御借米之儀 御先代様御苦労ニ思召度々
御意之趣も有之候尤御家中之儀甚困窮之趣
相聞候ニ付御借米之内少々 御免被成候此節之
御勝手向之趣ニ候得者中々箇様之御取扱ニ難被及

現代語訳
【御家中への御借米一部免除の申し渡し（前頁より続く）】
御家中の御借米の儀について、御先代様（先君）が御苦労に思し召され、度々御意（おぼしめし）をお示しになったことがございました。まことに御家中の者どもが甚だ困窮しているとの由が聞こえますにつき、御借米のうち少々を御免（ご返済免除）になることとされました。現在の御勝手向き（財政状況）の実情からすれば、とうていこのような御取り扱いには及び難い事情ではありますが、御先代様が深くお心に懸けておられたこと、また御代始めの御事（新藩主就任の初めの時）でもあり、諸々右のような趣旨である間、これまでどおり倹約を守り、いよいよ勘弁（節約・工夫）を尽くして取り続けるよう、仰せ出されました。以上。
但し、江戸の御屋形においては、同月二十八日に御家老・芦田図書が申し渡した。

一、六月二十一日、御用番・松平右近将監（武元）殿より御呼び出しがあり、御留守居・加藤長右衛門（正敏）が罷り出たところ、去る十六日に差し出した御伺書へ御付札（付箋による回答・指示）をもって御差図（ご指示）があった。

**[Continued from previous page: Instructions regarding the partial remission of borrowed rice for domain retainers]**
Regarding the matter of the borrowed rice (*shakumai*) owed by members of the domain household: the late lord [our predecessor] had repeatedly expressed his deep concern over this burden, and word has reached us that the retainers are indeed in a state of severe hardship. Accordingly, it has been decided that a portion of the outstanding borrowed rice shall be forgiven [i.e., its repayment waived]. Given the current state of domain finances, this kind of treatment would ordinarily be quite beyond what could be managed; nevertheless, in consideration of the late lord's profound wishes in this matter, and as this is also the beginning of the new lord's reign, it has been declared that — for all these reasons — retainers shall continue to observe frugality as before, and shall endeavor with ever-greater diligence and careful management to sustain the domain's affairs. Thus it is decreed. The foregoing is hereby communicated.
Note: At the Edo residence, the same instructions were conveyed on the twenty-eighth day of the same month by the chief retainer (*karō*) Ashida Zusho.

One: On the twenty-first day of the Sixth Month, a summons was issued by the Duty Councillor (*Goyōban*) Lord Matsudaira Ukonshōgen (Takemoto), and the Resident Official (*rusui*) Katō Chōemon (Masatoshi) presented himself accordingly. At this meeting, instructions were conveyed by means of an attached memorandum (*tsukifuda*) appended to the inquiry document (*ukagaisho*) that had been submitted on the sixteenth of the previous month.

To the Three Gosho-sama:
Lotus rice (*hachisu-meshi* / *ren-han*) — one ceremonial arrangement (*kazari*) each
Mackerel (*sashisaba*) — one box each
We humbly wish to present the above as a *Chūgen* [mid-year] gift offering, from private [internal domain] funds.
We respectfully submit this inquiry. The foregoing is hereby communicated.
