One: On the same day, in connection with the same matter, as a gesture of thanks from the inner quarters (*o-naishō*), a female envoy (*onnashi*) named Sakio was dispatched to the Main Castle (*Hon-maru*), and a female envoy named Yasoda was dispatched to the West Castle (*Nishi-maru*). Note: Regarding the dispatch of female envoys as an expression of thanks for the gifts received, this shall henceforth be treated as established precedent and will not be recorded here. One: On the twenty-eighth day of the seventh month, a circular letter (*mawashijō*) was sent from the Senior Inspectors (*Ōmetsuke*), communicating the following: "The appearance and conduct (*fūzoku*) of those attendants accompanying processions is unsatisfactory, and among the *chūgen* (lower-ranking servants) in particular, slovenliness has become especially pronounced. Those households employing persons from rural areas (*zaishosha*) must ensure that no such individuals of this kind are retained in their service. Henceforth, this is to be strictly (*kakuto*) ceased. The same instruction is to be conveyed to all servants (*hōkōnin*)." This circular was transmitted through the *rusui* (caretaker officials in Edo) of Lord Matsudaira Aki-no-Kami Yoshinaga and Lord Matsudaira Ōi-no-Kami. One: On the first day of the eighth month, for the ceremonial congratulations (*shūgi*): as [the young lord] was of a tender age, the Head of the Advance Guard (*o-saki mono-gashira*) Sakakibara Sukizaemon (Narufusa) was dispatched as envoy [dressed in white ceremonial robes and long formal *hakama*], following the precedents set by the previous lord: To the Kubō-sama: one sword (*tachi*) and one horse [in lieu, ten *ryō* in gold] were presented. At the Grand Audience Chamber's Third Room (*Ōhiroma San-no-Ma*) of the castle, the Senior Councillors were in attendance, and the Shogunal Announcer (*Sōjaban*) Lord Naitō Yamato-no-Kami (Yoriyoshi) made the formal announcement. To the Dainagon-sama: through the same envoy, at the same location, identical gifts were presented. The gift register (*mokuroku*) for the items was handed to a retainer of the Shogunal Announcer Lord Inoue Tōtōmi-no-Kami (Masaatsu). One: On the sixth day of the same month, the *rusui* (Edo caretaker) Tsuda Kūemon (Moriyuki) was dispatched as envoy, following the precedents set by the previous lord: To the Kubō-sama: three fresh first-catch cod (*hatsutara*), a regional product of the domain, were presented. The Shogunal Attendant (*sobashū*) Lord Miura Higo-no-Kami informed [the envoy] that the presentation would be duly announced in due course. To the Dainagon-sama: through the same envoy, the same items were presented. The Shogunal Attendant Lord Mizuno Tamba-no-Kami informed [the envoy] that the presentation would be duly announced in due course.
