Note: Henceforth, orders for guard duty (mokuchū) issued to members of the Jōfu-gumi (permanently Edo-stationed unit) will not be recorded.
Item: On the 2nd day of the 9th month, as a congratulatory gift for the Chōyō Festival (Double Ninth Festival), the domain's Edo representative (rusuī) Tsuda Kūemon (Shōjo) was dispatched as the ceremonial messenger, following the precedent set by the previous lord:
Two kosode robes (one with the family crest in noshime weave with tea-colored lining, and one in satin with crimson lining) were presented to the Shōgun. At Yanagi-no-Ma (Willow Chamber) in the castle, the Senior Councilor (Rōjū) Honda Hōki-no-Kami (Masayoshi) was present, and the presentation was formally announced through the Sōshaban (Master of Ceremonies).
The same messenger presented an identical gift to the Dainagon (the Shōgun's heir). The Senior Councilor (Rōjū) Akimoto Tajima-no-Kami (Suzutomo), who was attached to the same residence, was present, and the presentation was formally announced through the Sōshaban.
Item: On the 4th day of the same month, in connection with the above, through a written communication from the senior lady-in-waiting (rōjochū), three sets of御時服 (seasonal formal robes) and one box of dried sea bream were received as gifts for the first time. On that occasion, a monetary gift of 300 hiki accompanied by a written inventory (meiroku) was sent to the messenger; 200 hiki each to three upper escort leaders (kami-sairyō); 200 hiki each to four lower escort leaders (shimo-sairyō); and 300 hiki to ten bearers (mochinin). Sake and soup were also provided.
Note: Henceforth, items bestowed upon the messenger and others in connection with the Chōyō Festival gifts will not be recorded, as this has become a fixed custom.
Regarding the expression of gratitude for the above-mentioned gifts: as the lord was still of young age, his proxy Yamato-no-Kami Tomanori personally called upon the Duty Senior Councilor Hotta Sagami-no-Kami (Masasuke), the Senior Councilor attached to the Ōgosho (Retired Shōgun) Nishio Oki-no-Kami (Tadanao), and the Senior Councilor attached to the Dainagon Akimoto Tajima-no-Kami (Suzutomo). The Shoinban-gashira (Captain of the castle guard) Nakane Yukinojo (■Kan?) was dispatched as a messenger to the remaining Senior Councilors. To Senior Councilor Hotta Sagami-no-Kami (Masasuke)— (continued on next page)
