...to Izumo-no-kami (Tadamitsu) and Ogasawara Iwami-no-kami (Masanori), a messenger (otsukaiban) was dispatched.
Item: On the same day, on the occasion of the first snowfall, the留守居 (Rusuii, resident official) Katō Chōemon (Masatoshi) was dispatched as a messenger to the castle to inquire after the well-being of the Kubō-sama (the Shogun), the Ōgosho-sama (the Retired Shogun), and the Dainagon-sama. At the Hon-maru (Main Keep), the matter was received and conveyed by the Metsuke (Inspector) Mizuno Seizoku, and at the Nishi-maru (Western Keep), by the Metsuke Hagiwara Mondai-no-shō.
Note: Since no snow had fallen since the previous winter and today was the first snowfall, a messenger was dispatched to inquire after their well-being.
Item: Regarding the dispatch of the above messenger, since this will henceforth become a regular established custom, it will not be recorded again.
Item: On the third day of the first month, on the occasion of the celebratory first-of-the-year utai (謡初め, Noh chant ceremony), through the messenger and Rusuii Yokota Sakudayū (Naomichi), in accordance with the precedent of the previous lord, the following were presented to the Kubō-sama: a sake cup stand (sakazuki-dai), two unglazed ceramic cups (kawarake), and one piece of white silver as a gift in lieu of sake.
Item: On the fourth day of the same month, as a celebration for the successful completion of the three-day New Year ceremonies, the Rusuii Yokota Sakutadayū (Naomichi) was dispatched as messenger to the Senior Councillor on Duty (Goyōban) Hotta Sagami-no-kami (Masaaki), to the Rōjū attached to the Ōgosho-sama, Nishio Oki-no-kami (Tadanao), and to the Rōjū attached to the Dainagon-sama, Akimoto Tajima-no-kami (Suketomo). Subsequently, the local Rusuii Arakawa Sukeemon (Katsushige) was dispatched as messenger to the Kyoto Shoshidai (Kyoto Deputy) Matsudaira Bungo-no-kami (Sukenori).
Note: Although it is established precedent (osakikaku) to send a formal letter to the Shoshidai, since the lord is of young age, a messenger was instead dispatched (text continues below)...
