...even when persons from other establishments attend such gatherings, the meal must not exceed one or two side dishes. Nevertheless, it has lately been observed that things have naturally become more elaborate in various respects. Since this matter was decreed in accordance with the wishes of our late lord (gosendai-sama), it must be understood with particular care. It is therefore expected that each gathering be conducted as simply as possible, so that people may meet in an amicable and familiar manner at all times. If too much formality is observed, a natural distance will arise and frequent gatherings will become difficult to arrange. Moreover, this would be contrary to established house rules, which is problematic in every regard. Therefore, this matter must be strictly adhered to without fail.
Item: On the 3rd day of the 11th month, the household administrator (goyōnin) Daidōji Magokurō (Shigenori) called upon the Senior Elder (rōjū) Hotta Sagami-no-Kami (Masasuke)-dono (having been introduced through Ōoka Izumo-no-Kami-dono). Through Hotta's aide Kasugai Shōbei, Daidōji inquired discreetly about the Senior Elder's private opinion (naī) regarding the content of the formal marriage proposal document (odashifumi). Sagami-no-Kami-dono expressed his agreement, stating that while marriage proposals from the Gosanke (the three senior Tokugawa branch houses) to the domains of Kaga, Mutsu (Sendai), and Satsuma are generally conducted as one-sided petitions — with no formal notification to the shogunal government (kōgi) required from the receiving party — the case of this domain was one of distinguished lineage, and particularly given the matter concerning Yoshimaru-sama, it warranted special consideration. He therefore conveyed through Shōbei his private opinion that it would be appropriate to submit the aforementioned document to the duty elder (goyōban) through the proper channels of request.
Note: The aforementioned formal proposal document is recorded in the entry for the 23rd day of the same month.
Item: On the 11th day of the same month, since there had been repeated occasions of official requests and favors extended by the senior chamberlain (sobashū) Ōoka Izumo-no-Kami (Tadamitsu)-dono, one horse was presented to him discreetly through the household administrator Daidōji Magokurō (Shigenori).
Item: On the 13th day of the same month, as customary... (continued on next page)
