[Continued from previous page] ...and so it is a matter of the deepest regret. That said, since Ogimaru succeeded to the headship while still in his youth, a directive was issued that any matters on which the house elders could not reach unanimous agreement should be referred to the Lord of Hitotsubashi for guidance; through this arrangement, the administration of the household members and the domain has been conducted in an orderly and proper manner, for which we are most especially grateful. Though we are deeply conscious of our presumptuousness in raising the following, we respectfully note: from the time of the Chūnagon-dono onward, and continuing through the tenures of Saisho Tadanao and Saisho Tadamasa, it was the unvarying and proper custom — both inside and outside the castle, and on occasions of travel abroad — that all parties would perform the full prostration (sōgeza) as a mark of respect. However, during the tenure of the late Echizen-no-Kami Mitsumichi and the late Hyōbu-no-Taifu Yoshishina, this practice of universal prostration fell into abeyance. Thereafter, following the era of Jōken-in-sama, and after Echizen-no-Kami Tsunamasa succeeded to the headship, in recognition of the family's distinguished lineage, a directive was issued restoring the universal prostration in accordance with the ancient custom. That this lapsed practice was formally reinstated by decree is a matter of especial honor and distinction for this house. With regard to the foregoing: although Ogimaru has not yet formally entered official service in a public capacity, he has been permitted to attend the castle through private channels; therefore, if a directive concerning the universal prostration were now to be issued at this juncture, the heartfelt wish held by Hyōbu-no-Taifu during his lifetime would be fulfilled, and a proper framework befitting Ogimaru's position upon his entry into this household would be established — a matter for which we would be most deeply grateful. The ancient protocols of this house are manifold in their particulars; however, since the practice of universal prostration is a matter attested by recent precedent, we, the entire household, most humbly petition that a directive on this matter be graciously issued. As this honorable person has shown care and consideration regarding Ogimaru — both before and after the decree appointing him as adopted heir — we presume, without regard to the impropriety of doing so, to bring this matter to your attention. It was also the intention of Hyōbu-no-Taifu, with regard to Ogimaru's maturity and upbringing... [continued on next page]
