When viewed from around Mochizuki-juku (post station), the color of the smoke was white like snow, covering the entire sky like clouds, appearing as intense as lightning. It calmed down around the hour of the Sheep (around 2 PM) on the same day, but from the hour of the Sheep on the first day of the month, it erupted again with even stronger rumbling. Weak huts around Oiwake-juku were shaken and collapsed, and people panicked and cried in sorrow, fearing that even large houses might collapse, but it calmed down again around the hour of the Rooster (around 6 PM). According to someone who stayed at Oiwake-juku on the night of the first, the eruptions continued daily thereafter, both night and day.
At a place called Ozasa, stones the size of hand balls fell, and around Odai-juku and Ozasa, lions and wolves gathered in packs and attacked people and horses, so hunters shot them with guns, but there were so many that they retreated. Also, when inquiring about neighboring provinces within fifteen to sixteen ri or about twenty ri, I heard that in areas where volcanic ash fell, some places received five to six sun or even eight to nine sun of ash.
1. In Edo, on the morning of the seventh day, the sky was covered with reddish-black clouds, and by midday
