起さは皆辺土也阿含経智度論などさま〳〵に説て大地

地球一周九万里是を唐土の一里六町として日本の一里三十六丁に
算すれは一周一万五千里となる然る時は地心より地上まで凡二千
五百里也此圖黒点の間凡一千五百里也今度の地震方二百
里と見る時は僅に圖する所の小円の中に当れり是を以て震
動する所の微小なると地球の広大なる事をおもひはかるべし
○愚按するに天地の中造化皆本末有本とは根本にして心なり
心とは震動する所の至て猛-烈なる所をさす其心より四方へ散じて
漸く柔緩（ゆるく）なるを末とす然は東より揺（ゆり）来るにあらず動来るに
あらずす其心より揺（うごき）初て四方に至り其限は段々微動にて畢る
ならん今度動する所京師を心として近国に亘り末東武

（前ページより続き）起きることがあれば、みな辺境の地のことである。阿含経や智度論などにさまざまに説かれており、大地がすべて動くかのように聞こえるが、そうではない。最初に述べたとおり、地震は各地・各気・各動（それぞれの場所で、それぞれの気の働きによって、それぞれに動く）ものである。私は『天経或問』に基づいて一つの図を設けて、これを説明する。

地球の一周は九万里であり、これを唐土（中国）の一里六町として日本の一里三十六丁に換算すれば、一周一万五千里となる。そうすると、地球の中心から地表までおよそ二千五百里となる。この図の黒点の間はおよそ千五百里である。今回の地震を方二百里（縦横二百里の範囲）と見たとき、わずかに図中の小円の中に当たるに過ぎない。これをもって、震動する範囲がいかに微小であり、地球がいかに広大であるかを推し量るべきである。
○私が考察するに、天地の中で造化（自然の働き）にはすべて本末がある。「本」とは根本であり、「心」である。「心」とは、震動する場所のうち最も猛烈な箇所を指す。その「心」から四方へ広がって次第に穏やかになるのを「末」とする。そうであれば、東から揺れが来るのでも、どこかから動いてくるのでもない。その「心」から揺れ始めて四方に至り、その限界に達するころには段々と微かな動きとなって終わるのであろう。今回動いた範囲は、京師（京都）を「心」（震源）として近国に広がり、「末」は東武（江戸）

The Āgama Sūtras, the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Śāstra, and other texts describe various things that make it sound as though the entire earth moves — but that is not the case. As stated at the outset, earthquakes occur each in their own place, driven by their own qi, moving in their own way. I have prepared a diagram based on the Tenkyō wakumon ("Questions and Answers on the Heavens") to illustrate this point.

The circumference of the Earth is 90,000 ri. Converting this from Chinese ri (1 ri = 6 chō) into Japanese ri (1 ri = 36 chō), the circumference becomes 15,000 ri. In that case, the distance from the center of the Earth to its surface is approximately 2,500 ri. In this diagram, the distance between the black dots is approximately 1,500 ri. When the area affected by this recent earthquake is estimated at 200 ri square, it corresponds to only a small circle within the diagram. From this, one should appreciate how minute the area of seismic activity is, and how vast the Earth truly is.
○Upon my reflection, within heaven and earth, all of the workings of nature (zōka) have a root (hon) and branches (sue). The "root" is the foundation — the "heart" (shin/kokoro). The "heart" refers to the most violently shaking point of the earthquake. What spreads outward from this "heart" in all directions, gradually becoming gentler, is the "branches." Thus, it is not that the shaking comes from the east, nor that it travels from somewhere else. Rather, the shaking originates from the "heart" and spreads in all directions, dying away as faint tremors at its farthest reaches. In this recent earthquake, with the capital (Kyoto) as the "heart" (epicenter), it extended to neighboring provinces, and at its "branches" reached as far as Tōbu (Edo)...
