一又前の筆記に此節の死亡人殆と十二万人に及へりと聞けとも予案する所ハ十余

一 ある人の筆記によると、安政二年（乙卯）十月二日の夜、午後十時過ぎに空中が突然光り輝き、稲妻のように光った。まるで雲の端で電光が走るかのようであったが、すぐに大地震が起こり、わずか二、三呼吸の間に三十里の範囲に達したという。これらを合わせて考えると、この夜地震に先立って空中が光を発したことは事実である。しかし午後十時過ぎの出来事であったため目撃者は少なく、また地震の騒ぎに紛れて語る者もいなかった。前述の浦賀の漁師たちの話では、その形は何とも例えようのないものであったという。いったいどのような怪火であったのだろうか。さらに目撃者に尋ねて順次記録すべきである。
一 また前の記録によると、この度の死亡者数はおよそ十二万人に及んだと聞いているが、私が推測するところでは十数万人の半分にも及ばず、三分の一程度ではないかと思われる。実際に十数万人の死亡があったなら、地震後に物価が高騰することはなかったはずである。この説によれば、先に記録した十九万余人という諸寺院の調査は全く根拠のない話なのだろうか。追って真実を確かめて記録すべきである。
ただし、この度の圧死者の中には、諸大名家の庶子や息女なども少なからず圧死されており、旗本などにも多くいたが、いずれも表向きは病死として処理し、また死人もひとまず隠している状況である。五、六人の家族のうち一、二人が残った例なども私が知るだけでも少なくないので、圧死者の多いことは確かであるが、どうしてもその人数は分からない。しかし江戸の人口が三分の一か四分の一には減っているはずである。

One account written by someone states that on the night of the second day of the tenth month of Ansei 2 (Year of the Wood Rabbit, 1855), after the hour of the Rat (around 10 PM), the sky suddenly began to shine brilliantly, flashing like lightning. It appeared as if electric light was bursting forth from the edges of clouds, but immediately afterward a great earthquake occurred, reaching across thirty ri in just two or three breaths. Considering all these accounts together, it is factual that the sky emitted light before the earthquake that night. However, since this occurred after 10 PM, few people witnessed it, and moreover, no one spoke of it due to the confusion of the earthquake. According to the earlier account by the fishermen of Uraga, the shape was indescribable. What kind of mysterious fire could it have been? I should continue to inquire with eyewitnesses and record their accounts.
Another previous record states that the death toll from this disaster reached approximately 120,000 people, but in my estimation it likely did not reach even half of over 100,000, perhaps only about one-third. If there truly had been deaths numbering over 100,000, commodity prices would not have risen so high after the earthquake. According to this theory, the temple surveys I recorded earlier claiming over 190,000 deaths must be completely unfounded. I should pursue the truth and record it properly.
However, among the casualties from crushing in this disaster, there were not few illegitimate children and daughters of various daimyo families who were crushed to death, and there were many among the hatamoto as well. Yet all of these were officially reported as deaths from illness, and the deaths were generally kept hidden. Even among the cases I know of families of five or six people with only one or two survivors, there are not few, so the number of deaths from crushing must certainly be great. However, the exact number cannot be determined. Nevertheless, Edo's population must have decreased by one-third to one-quarter.
