叙
一日（いちじつ）書舗（しよほ）耕書堂（かうしよとうの）主人（しゆじん）予（よ）が艸盧（さうろ）に来（きた）り如例（れいのことく）一冊子（いつさつし）を
編（あめ）よと乞（こふ）予日月を費（ついや）し筆紙（ひつし）を損（そん）ずるを厭（いと）ひて諾（だく）せず
書肆（しよし）の云（いふ）詩（しに）曰（いはく）善戯謔兮（よくぎぎやくそれとも）不為虐兮（ぎやくをなさず）といへり先生（せんせい）が一（いち）
時（じ）の漫戯（まんけ）は我（わが）百歳（ひやくさい）の活計（くわつけい）なり奈何（いかん）ぞ筆（ふで）を損（そん）する
而已（のみ）ならずや於是（こゝにおいて）止（やむ）ことを得（え）ず曽（かつて）世（よ）に和荘兵衛（わさうひやうゑ）と云（いふ）冊子（さうし）

序
ある日、書店「耕書堂」の主人が私の草庵にやって来て、いつものように一冊の本を編集してほしいと頼んだ。私は時間を費やし筆や紙を無駄にするのを嫌って承諾しなかった。
書店主が言うには、「詩経に『よく戯れ謔（からか）うが、それとも虐（ひど）いことはしない』とあります。先生の一時の戯作は、私の一生の生計の糧なのです。どうして筆を損するだけのことでしょうか」と。
ここにおいて断ることができず、かつて世に「和荘兵衛」という草紙があったのを思い出して、あの草紙の続編を書いて与えることにした、ということである。

Preface
One day, the proprietor of the bookstore "Kōshodō" came to my humble cottage and, as usual, requested that I compile a book. I declined, reluctant to waste time and consume paper and ink.
The bookseller said: "The Book of Songs states: 'They are good at jesting and joking, yet they do not become cruel.' Your momentary diversions, Master, are the sustenance of my entire livelihood. How can this be merely a waste of ink and brush?"
At this point, I could not refuse. I recalled that there once existed a popular book called "Wasōbei," and decided to write a sequel to that work and give it to him.
