現代語訳
先年、長崎辺りに和荘兵衛という者がいた。少し学問のある男であったが、ある日釣りに出て、風に流されながら、不老不死国、自在国などという国々を巡って、ついに荘子の寓言をもって人を教え導く道理を悟り、各国の様子を四冊の書に表して、大いに世に広まって人の知るところとなった。

和荘兵衛はその後思うことには、「吉野山去年の栞の道変えて、まだ見ぬ方の国々を巡り、なおも一書を表そう」と、半年連れ添って戻ってきた鶴に乗り、吉日を選んでどこを当てともなく飛び出た。
【和荘兵衛、鶴に乗る】
「嬉しや嬉しや、どこやら国が見えるぞ。急げ急げ」
鶴：
「ああ疲れた疲れた。羽根も疲れて痛くなった。この国で一つ風呂でも借りよう。和荘よ、高いところから降りよう」
和荘兵衛：
「どこでもいいから、いい湯の出る酒屋の前に降ろしてください」
英語訳
In previous years, there was a man named Wasōbei in the Nagasaki area. He was a man of some learning, but one day he went out fishing and was blown by the wind, wandering through countries called the Land of Immortality, the Land of Freedom, and such places. Eventually he came to understand the principle of teaching and guiding people through Zhuangzi's allegories, and he depicted the conditions of various countries in four books, which became widely popular and well-known to the people.

Afterward, Wasōbei thought to himself: "Changing the path from last year's bookmark at Mount Yoshino, I shall travel to countries in directions yet unseen and publish yet another book." He mounted the crane that had accompanied him for half a year on his return journey, chose an auspicious day, and flew off without any particular destination in mind.
[Wasōbei riding the crane]
"How delightful! I can see some country over there. Hurry, hurry!"
Crane:
"Oh, I'm so tired, so tired. My wings are sore and aching. Let's borrow a bath somewhere in this country. Wasō, let's descend from this height."
Wasōbei:
"Anywhere is fine - please let me down in front of a sake shop with good hot water."
