一、上田領の稲荷山（これは上方から善光寺への往還道にあたる）、この村で善光寺参りの老男老女五百人が泊まっていたところ、一瞬にして押し潰されて死に、さらに出火して焼けてしまった。地元の者も三百人ほど亡くなったとのことである。いわゆる「直下型地震」というもので、即座に家が潰れるため逃げ出す間もなく、壁を破ったり屋根をくぐり抜けて脱出できた者もいたが、多くは旅人を泊めるために二階建ての宿にしていたため、二階が落ちて死人が多く出たとのことである。
一、松代領の八幡篠井村でも旅人が夥しく死んだ。そのほか、善光寺は本当に大変なことになっており、旅人三千人余りが泊まっていたところ、町の家々が将棋倒しになり、怪我人・死人が出た。さらに大火となり、本堂と山門だけが残り、後は焼けてしまった。陣屋門前の者も参詣のために泊まり合わせていたが、地震と思ったら即座に起き上がり、足で歩いたところに二階が落ちてきたので、一人がかろうじてその隙間をかいくぐり、裸のまま帰ってきた。同様の人々に次々と会って聞いたところ、一軒に三百人、または五百人ほど先に泊まっているところに群集していたため、右の理由により怪我をしたり焼け死んだりした者の数は知れないとのことである。

一、自分のことについては、十九日に中之条を出立して、御願出張陣屋へ参り、二十四日に帰陣した。同日夜、草臥れたので四つ（午後十時頃）前に横になったところ、にわかに大地震の様子となり、

One: In the village of Inariyama in the Ueda domain (located on the highway from the Kamigata region to Zenkoji Temple), five hundred elderly men and women who were staying there as pilgrims to Zenkoji were all at once crushed to death, and then a fire broke out and burned the place down. Around three hundred local residents also reportedly perished. This being what is called a "direct earthquake," the houses collapsed instantly, leaving no time to escape. Some were able to break through walls or crawl out through the rooftops, but most of the travelers had been lodged in two-story inns, and so when the upper floors collapsed, there were many deaths.
One: In Yahata-Shinoi village in the Matsushiro domain as well, a great many travelers died. Furthermore, Zenkoji Temple itself suffered a truly catastrophic fate: more than three thousand pilgrims were staying there when the town's buildings fell like a row of toppling go pieces, causing injuries and deaths. A great fire then broke out, leaving only the main hall and the mountain gate standing, while the rest burned down. Those staying near the outpost gate who had come as pilgrims were also caught there; when the earthquake struck, they immediately rose up, and as they walked about, the upper floor collapsed upon them. One person barely managed to crawl through a gap and returned home completely naked. By successively meeting and speaking with others in similar circumstances, it was learned that places housing three to five hundred people at a time were packed with crowds, and as a result the number of those injured or burned to death is beyond counting.
One: No sooner had the earthquake struck than fires broke out in so many places the number could not be known; the sky to the north appeared red. It is believed that Echigo province also experienced an earthquake of the same magnitude. ◯ With fires breaking out in the wake of the earthquake, it was impossible to extinguish them at all—each person could only look after their own safety—and so things burned as they would, making the scene equivalent to an entire village being destroyed. ◯ From within my own administrative jurisdiction, three villages sent reports, each stating that their village was completely destroyed with not a single house standing. There appear to have been over a hundred injured, but the full picture has yet to be determined, according to the reports. These are villages located beyond Zenkoji. Beyond these, similar reports arrive daily—it is a terrifying matter, and truly it is as if one is witnessing hell with one's own eyes.
One: As for myself, I departed Nakanojo on the 19th, traveled to the administrative outpost on official business, and returned to the post on the 24th.
