**Kōka 4th Year (Hitsuji Year) — Report on the Great Earthquake in Shinano Province**
On the 24th of this month, the weather was clear both day and night, with an exceptionally calm and warm wind. However, at the hour of Yotsu (around 10 o'clock at night), a great earthquake struck. At my residence (jinya) in Nakanosho Village, Shinshū, the structures, ridgepoles, and mud walls were toppled in various places. Furthermore, the farmhouses of the villages under our jurisdiction and nearby villages that were left unattended also had their outbuildings and surroundings shaken and toppled. The shaking was extremely violent, and after some time it gradually subsided; however, thereafter, with brief intervals, the tremors continued without cease. From the direction to the north of the jinya, a sound resembling thunder rumbled, and by dawn, there had been approximately eighty or more tremors. The following morning, things became somewhat calmer, but even now the shaking has not ceased. Within the territory under our administration, in the villages of Mizu'uchi District, there are reports of collapsed houses and injured persons; however, no formal complaints have yet been filed. As rumors have gradually reached us, we have learned that from the Kawanakajima area of the same province, toward Zenkoji Temple, and further south into the area known as "Yamanaka," the earthquake appears to have been most severe. In the Kawanakajima area, the farmhouses of entire villages — or at least the majority — have been toppled…
