郡内の川沿いの村々が水中に没し、瀬の流れが通じているように見受けられ、数か村（か所）にわたって、作物への泥の冠水はもちろん、押し掘られた箇所も夥しくございます。しかしながら詳細は見極めがたく、夜半過ぎになってようやく水位も落ち着いてきた様子で、夜明けになるにつれて次第に引き水となりました。かねてより村方の者どもには水防の手当を申し付けておきましたが、突然の押し出しで、未曾有の迅速な大水で、想定外のことであり、家屋の流失はもちろん、溺死者も出ているかもしれません。その上、多大な損地も生じるであろうと心を痛めております。詳細については追って申し上げますが、まず取り急ぎこの段をご届け申し上げます。以上。

私の御代官所、当分御預かり所の越後国頸城郡の村々において、去る月（三月）二十四日の夜四つ時（午後10時）頃より地震があり、強く度々の震り返し等がございました。川浦村の陣屋・本陣・長屋の向柱がくじけ、壁の損傷箇所が夥しく、同村ならびに最寄りの村々において多数の潰家が出来し、即死人・怪我人等もある由。遠方の村々からはいまだ届け出がありませんが、同様の趣が聞こえておりますので、詳細は追ってまた申し上げますが、まずこの段をご届け申し上げます。以上。

【個人からの書状】
一筆申し上げます。三月二十四日夜四つ時の大地震により、善光寺■■（周辺の町）は残らず潰れて焼け払われ、残った所は下後町より下方は焼けておらず、桜小路の西の端が十間ほど残りました。御本堂・三門は残り、その外は残らず蔵まで焼けました。その外、松代様の御城まで地震で潰れたと聞いております。須坂（以下続く）

**[Continuation of the Report by Sanada Shinano-no-Kami]**
The villages along the rivers within the district were completely submerged, and the flow of the current appeared to pass right through them. Across several villages (and locations), not only were the crops buried in mud, but there were also countless places where the ground had been gouged out by the floodwaters. The full extent was difficult to assess, but past midnight the water level appeared to finally stabilize, and by dawn the waters gradually began to recede. Though the villagers had previously been instructed to prepare flood defenses, the floodwaters burst forth so suddenly, and with such unprecedented speed and force — truly beyond anything ever experienced — that it was beyond anyone's imagination. Not only have houses been swept away, but there may well be deaths by drowning. Furthermore, I am deeply troubled that there will likely be extensive damage to agricultural land. I will report the details in due course, but for now I humbly submit this initial report. Respectfully submitted.

In the villages of Kubiki District, Echigo Province, which fall under my jurisdiction as daikan (magistrate) and are currently under my temporary administration, from around the Hour of the Rat (approximately 10 p.m.) on the night of the 24th of last month (the 3rd month), there were earthquakes of great intensity with repeated aftershocks. At the Kawaura Village government office, the main inn, and the long house, supporting pillars were buckled and there was extensive wall damage. In that village and the surrounding villages, many buildings have collapsed, and there have been reports of people killed outright and others injured. Reports have not yet arrived from more distant villages, but similar circumstances have been heard of there as well. I will report the details further in due course, but for now I humbly submit this initial notification. Respectfully submitted.

**[Letter from a Private Individual]**
I write to inform you of the following. Due to the great earthquake on the night of the 24th of the 3rd month at the Hour of the Rat, the entirety of the Zenkoji [area] ■■ was leveled and burned to the ground. What remained unburned was the area below Shimogochō and below, while approximately ten ken (roughly 18 meters) at the western end of Sakura-kōji survived. The Main Hall (Hondō) and the Sanmon Gate survived, but everything else, including the storehouses, was burned.
