そふとも〳〵まづ今度（こんど）の火事（かじ）の大（たひ）へんは
〽去程（さるほど）にへい気（き）の見物（けんぶつ）十万よき道（ミち）之 邪魔（ぢやま）
にぞなりにける仕方（しかた）のないわ病人（びようにん）子ども
乗合（のりあひ）おし合龍閑町二手（あひりうかんちようふたて）にわかれおそれ出（で）る

現代語訳
よろよろしながら歩いてくる。「エヘン、逃げ延びた者は、焼け原でけんかしながら駆けつけてくる、という野次馬でございます。なんじゃ、お前たち、わしに火事場の話をしてくれ」「ぜひ、まあ話しましょう、話しましょう。まず今度の火事の大変さといったら――」
〽「さるほどに、平気な見物人が十万人あまり、道の邪魔になることといったら。仕方のないことよ。病人、子ども、乗り合いの人たちが押し合いながら、龍閑町で二手に分かれ、おそるおそる逃げ出した。」
その時、駆けつけた者が思うには、「衣類や荷物、これも邪魔だ。自分一人助かって、高名を上げてやろう」と顔にも出さず、ただ一気に何度逃げても焼けて追ってくる。神田へこそ（火が）吹きつけた。近所あたりも火だ、火事だ。頭巾も羽織も焼け焦がされて、「えい、おう、危ない！」という始末となり、
〽「ついに深川へ飛び火して、焼け出されてうろたえる人々を、それと見るやいなや、皆――」

Staggering along, they come walking. "Ahem! Those who have managed to escape are the rubberneckers (yajiuma) who come rushing in, quarreling amidst the burned ruins. What's this — please tell me the story of the fire scene." "By all means, let's talk, let's talk! First, as for how terrible this latest fire was—"
♪ "Indeed, some hundred thousand carefree spectators became an enormous obstruction on the roads — there was nothing to be done about it. Invalids, children, and passengers all jostling together, they split into two groups at Ryūkanchō and fled in fear."
At that moment, those who had rushed to the scene thought to themselves: "Clothing and luggage — these too are just in the way. I'll save myself alone and win great renown!" — though they showed nothing of this on their faces. Yet no matter how many times they fled in a single rush, the fire kept burning and advancing. It was into Kanda that the flames blew. The whole neighborhood was on fire, fire everywhere. Their head-covers (zukin) and haori jackets were singed and burned. "Hey! Watch out — dangerous!" — and that was the state of things.
