Rain falls during the kaichō (public display of a temple's hidden Buddha). Lords take up commerce, and members of the imperial court rent out their storehouses. Temple priests reek of fish and flesh; their brocade robes smell of milk. Townspeople take to the Noh stage, while daughters of proper two-sworded samurai families serve as attendants to female jōruri reciters. A senior retainer who rose from foot soldier to chief elder is dismissed. The wives of back-alley tenements and small shops wear half-coats with apron strings of crepe silk, yet go in and out wearing only a single-layered sash. The serving girls who imitate them are all the more keen to swap their belongings, and slip their chapped, cracked feet into clogs with velvet thong straps. Even a household gleaming with polished all-copper fittings is forever in financial ruin. They dress up in fine clothes for sightseeing and pleasure trips, only to return home flustered by the rental fees they owe.
