大輪のものもあれば、小輪のものもある。葉が出始める時、青くして後に赤みに変わるものもある。また「吉野」と呼ばれるものがある。萼（がく）から蕊（しべ）にいたるまで青みを帯び、三房・四房ほど重なり集まってつくものを「山桐谷（やまきりがやつ）」という。概して山桜は花が疎らにつくものである。

Some specimens bear large blooms, while others bear small ones. As the leaves first emerge, some begin green before turning reddish. There is also a variety called "Yoshino." Those in which the flowers cluster together in groups of three or four, with a greenish hue from the calyx all the way to the stamens, are called "Yama-Kirigayatsu." As a general rule, the blossoms of Yama-zakura are sparsely arranged.

Mountain cherries — seeking to vie with one another in beauty,
do not hurry me along, as I am one who wanders these hills in sorrow.
○Kassho-ō said: "The flowers are single-petaled and white, with short stems. There are two varieties: one in which the blossoms are sparse, and one in which they are dense. The dense variety bears large blooms and resembles the Kirigayatsu cherry. It is also given the name Kaba-zakura (Birch-bark Cherry)."
