〔秘書を〕望んだので、「何でも交換しましょう」と言ったところ、「それならば、秘蔵の桜一株と交換しよう」と約束した。いよいよ送る当日、木の持ち主は名残を惜しみ、王昭君（おうしょうくん）が胡国（ここく）へ送られたことを思い出し、すなわちこの名を付けて遣わしたということである。

○怡顔斎いわく 千重咲き（せんようざき）にして、色は紅く、香気がたいへん馥郁（ふくいく）としている。小輪にして、花はまばらに付く。この香気のないものは緋桜（ひざくら）であり、〔香桜と緋桜は〕よく似たものである。

— [someone] had earnestly desired [the secret document], and so [the owner] said, "I will exchange it for whatever you wish." The other replied, "Then let us agree to exchange it for one cherished cherry tree." When the day finally came to send it, the owner of the tree lamented parting from it, and recalled the story of Wang Zhaojun (Ō Shōkun) being sent away to the land of the Hu (Kokoku). And so, on the spot, he gave the tree that name before sending it off — or so the story goes.

○Igan-sai states: It is a multi-petaled (senyo) variety, the color is red (crimson), and the fragrance is exceedingly rich and full. It is small-flowered, and the blossoms are sparsely attached. The variety that lacks this fragrance is the Hi-zakura (Scarlet Cherry), and the two are very closely resembling one another.
