○怡顔斎いわく、木も葉も普通の桜に似ており、小さな花が群がって生じて穂をなす。花は観賞するほどのものではない。すなわち、別名を「奈天（なでん）」、あるいは「上溝（うわみぞ）」ともいう。ただし、南殿（なんでん）の桜を略して「なでん」と呼ぶものと混同してはならない。これらは別物である。この犬桜の実は六月に熟す。その色は黄色で、味は杏仁（あんず・あんにん）に似ている。風流を好む者は塩漬けにして、酒を勧める肴（さかな）とする。

○Igan-sai states: Both the tree and its leaves resemble those of the common cherry (*tsune no sakura*), and small flowers grow in clusters forming spikes (*ho*). The flowers are not particularly worth admiring for ornamental purposes. It is also known by the alternate names *naden* or *uwamizo*. However, one must not confuse this with the abbreviated form *naden* used for the *Nanden no sakura* (South Hall Cherry) — they are entirely different varieties. The fruit of this *inu-zakura* ripens in the sixth month (approximately July by the solar calendar). Its color is yellow, and its flavor resembles that of apricot kernels (*kyōnin*). Those with a taste for such things pickle it in salt and use it as an accompaniment to encourage the drinking of sake.
