○怡顔斎又曰活所の説（せつ）誤（あやま）り也此花 開（ひらく）
事尤 早（はや）し彼岸（ひがん）糸桜に次（つぐ）桐谷よりも
早し或人云伊勢といへるは赤（あか）きの義也
宇治（うぢ）頼政（よりまさ）の諷（（うたひ）にも

　　伊勢（いせ）武者（むしや）は皆（みな）緋（ひ）おどしの鎧（よろひ）きて
　　　宇治のあじろにかゝりけるかな

現代語訳

【右丁】
○怡顔斎はさらにいわく、活所の説は誤りである。この花（伊勢桜）が開くのは特に早く、彼岸糸桜に次ぐほどで、桐谷桜よりも早い。ある人は、「伊勢」というのは「赤い」という意味だと言う。宇治・頼政の謡（うたい）にも、

　　伊勢武者はみな緋威（ひおどし）の鎧を着て
　　　宇治のあじろにかかりけるかな

とあり、これがその縁（よすが）であると言う。しかしこれもまた、こじつけで卑俗な説である。
考えるに、摂州（摂津国）の伊勢寺は、昔「伊勢」という人物が住んでいた所であり、その庭に植えた種（苗）に由来するものである。

○Igan-sai further states: Kassho's explanation is mistaken. This flower (Ise-zakura) blooms particularly early — second only to the *Higan-ito-zakura* (Higan weeping cherry), and even earlier than the *Kiritani-zakura*. Some say that "Ise" carries the meaning of "red" (*aka*). This is cited in the *utai* (Noh chant) associated with Uji and Yorimasa:

　　The warriors of Ise all wearing armor laced in scarlet (*hi-odoshi*),
　　　how they were caught in the fish-weirs of Uji.

It has been said that this is the connection (i.e., "Ise" = red). But this too is a far-fetched and vulgar explanation.
Upon reflection, the Ise-dera temple in Settsu Province (present-day Osaka/Hyogo area) was once the dwelling place of a person called "Ise," and the tree originates from seeds (or seedlings) planted in that garden.
