いにしへの奈良の都の八重さくら
けふ九重に匂ひぬるかな
と有 各（をの〳〵）当意即妙（たうゐそくめう）なる事（こと）万人（ばんじん）感（かん）
歎（たん）し宮中（きうちう）鼓動（こどう）すと云々又同し御時
南都（なら）南円堂（なんゑんどう）の前（まへ）に大（おほき）なる八重桜一木
あり天下の名花（めいくは）なればとて興福寺（こうぶくじ）
別当（へつたう）に仰（おほせ）て禁庭（きんてい）へ移（うつ）し植（うへ）給はんとて

いにしへの奈良の都の八重さくら
けふ九重に匂ひぬるかな
という歌があった。（その場にいた）人々はみな、当意即妙なる見事さに万人が感嘆し、宮中が大きく感動したと言われる。また、同じ（上東門院の）御代に、奈良の南円堂の前に大きな八重桜の木が一本あり、天下に名高い名花であるとして、興福寺の別当に命じて禁裏（御所）の庭へ移し植えようとされたところ、

いよいよ（その木を）引き抜く時になって、僧侶たちはこれを怒り、「たとえ罪を得ることになっても、この名木を他所へはやるまい」と抵抗し合った。このことを女院がお聞きになり、衆徒たちの心意気はまことに潔くいじらしいと感じ入られ、伊賀国の余野庄をその寺に寄進され、花の咲く頃には宿直（とのい）を付けて守らせるようにされたとのことである。

("The double-flowered cherry of ancient Nara's capital — today it blooms in fragrant glory within the ninefold palace.")
This poem was thus composed. Everyone present marveled at the instantaneous brilliance of her wit, and it is said that all ten thousand souls were moved to admiration, sending a wave of excitement throughout the entire court. Furthermore, during that same reign (of Jōtōmon'in), there was a great double-flowered cherry tree standing before the Nan'endō (South Circular Hall) in Nara. As it was considered a flower of incomparable renown throughout the realm, an order was given to the *bettō* (administrative head) of Kōfukuji temple to have it transplanted into the garden of the Imperial Palace.

However, just as the moment came to uproot the tree, the monks grew furious and declared, "Even if we must face punishment for it, we will not let this celebrated tree be taken to another place," and they collectively resisted the order. Upon hearing of this, the Lady-in-Retirement (Jōtōmon'in) was deeply moved, finding the devotion and spirit of the monastic community to be most admirable and touching. She accordingly donated the Yono-no-shō estate in Iga Province to the temple, and during the season of cherry blossoms, assigned a duty guard (*tonoi*) to watch over and protect the tree.
