(Finding that Central China lacked the necessary scriptures,) he sought the true texts of India, crossing the Ganges River from afar, with the lifelong aim of obtaining the "full-character" teachings (complete doctrines). He repeatedly climbed the peaks of the snow mountains and further obtained the "half-character" teachings. Traveling back and forth in pursuit of the Dharma for seventeen years in all, he became thoroughly versed in the Buddhist scriptures and devoted his heart entirely to benefiting all beings.
