現代語訳

【柱】行状記巻之一 一 真実ではなく、小乗・大乗の心性を研究・考察するものは、因分(修行の因の段階)にとどまって果海(悟りの境地)を隔てている。遮那(大日如来)の表徳の真の意義を論じ、法仏(法身仏)の内証の極理を述べることは、まさしく秘密真言の一宗(密教)にある。これこそは、人間にとっての膏腴(最も豊かな肥沃な部分)であり、法の肝腑(核心)である。 ここに偉大な聖者がおられ、弘法大師と申し上げる御方は、ひそかに本地(本来の仏としての身)を秘めて、その跡を辺域(辺境の地、すなわち日本)に垂れてくださった。御降誕の際の霊験あらたかな瑞兆、幼少の頃の吉祥の徴、奇特なことはなはだ多く、稀有なることこの上もない。修学の後、受具(具足戒を受けること)の間、広く内典・外典の書物を渉猟して、よく仏法・世俗の奥深い意義を極めた。本朝において(密教の)真髄を問うても(伝える)人がいないことを嘆き、異域(中国)に留学して海を渡った。勅命を賜ることを願い求めて、ついに大日如来第七代の付法(法を伝えられた者)、京師(長安)青龍寺の恵果和尚にお会いになり、両部の曼荼羅を伝え受け、諸尊の瑜伽(修法)を学び、経論を担い、道具を整えて持ち帰り、帝城(都)東寺の霊枢(霊妙な中枢)に納められ、皇図(天皇の統治)鎮護の秘宝とされた。恵慈が笈を負って上宮(聖徳太子)のために経を講じたそれ以来、仏法はわが朝に伝わり、聖人がこの境に現れたと言っても、秘経を宣揚して迷える者どもを引き導くことは、今まさに新たなものとなった。その遺流は長く伝わって、朝廷においても民間においても潤いを得ないものはない。ついに全身を南洞(高野山の奥の院)にとどめて、遥かに鶏園(祇園精舎)の月を…… 【柱】行状記巻之一 二

英語訳

[Column title] Record of Life and Conduct, Volume 1, No. 1 ...is not the truth. Those who investigate and examine the nature of mind through Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna remain at the level of the causal stage [of practice] and are separated from the ocean of fruition [enlightenment]. To discourse upon the true meaning of Vairocana's expressed virtues and to expound the ultimate principle of the Dharmakāya Buddha's inner realization — this belongs entirely and solely to the one school of esoteric Shingon. This is indeed the richest nourishment for humanity and the very core and marrow of the Dharma. Here there is a great sage, revered by the name of Kōbō Daishi, who secretly concealed his original ground [his true identity as a buddha] and let his traces fall upon a remote borderland [Japan]. The auspicious portents at the time of his birth, the propitious signs of his early childhood — his extraordinary qualities were exceedingly numerous and his rare and wondrous nature was beyond all measure. After his studies, and during the period leading up to his full ordination, he broadly surveyed the scriptures of both Buddhist and non-Buddhist learning, thoroughly penetrating the profound meanings of both sacred and secular teachings. Lamenting that there was no one in our land to whom he could turn for the true transmission [of esoteric Buddhism], he crossed the sea to study in a foreign land [China], earnestly seeking to receive an imperial edict [authorizing his voyage]. And so at last he came to meet the Venerable Huiguo of Qinglong Temple in the capital [Chang'an], the seventh-generation transmitter of the Dharma from Mahāvairocana Tathāgata. From him he received the transmission of the Mandalas of Both Realms [Womb and Diamond], learned the yoga [practices] of the various honored deities, and bearing the sūtras and treatises upon his back and carefully preserving the ritual implements, he returned and enshrined them in the sacred heart of Tōji temple in the imperial capital, making them the secret treasures for the protection of the imperial realm. Ever since the time when Hyeja [Ekiji] bore his satchel on his back and lectured on the sūtras before Prince Shōtoku [Jōgū], the Buddhist Dharma has been transmitted in our land, and though sages have appeared in this realm, the proclamation of the esoteric scriptures to guide those lost in delusion was now, at this moment, made entirely new and fresh. The stream of his transmitted legacy has been passed down for a long time, and there is none — whether at court or among the people — who has not been blessed by its beneficence.
