はる〳〵東に下￣りしもかゝる女房求めんため也
いかて捨置申さんとやかて御こしに乗参らせ
駿河をさして登￣らせ給ふは不思義成￣りし次第也
其時姫君仰けるはのふいかに旅の殿はつかしなから
自は今平産致候様子はかさねて可申此所へ
尋ぬる者候へは形見を相添捨置申共かくも
仰にしたかひまいらすへしとおさないを取￣リ上￣ケあら
いつしのおさないかな果報すくなく捨られ給ふ
とも命なからへはめくりあわんも白露の是を形見に残￣シ候と母君より給￣リし唐の鏡を取出￣シ
二ツに割裏に一首かくはかり
たらちねの父とひとつに備￣リて
国の女に位まされよ
姫君をはふくさに包薄の上に置く￣キなく〳〵
立のき給ふ扨御形見の物取もたせ国主とつれ
駿河に登￣リ給ふかくて大夫はよう〳〵水を求￣メ
本の所に帰￣リ見るに姫君はましまさす扨は
やかんのわさかとてふかくの泪せきあへず
現代語訳
はるばる東に下ってきたのも、このような女房を求めるためである。どうして捨て置き申せようか」とやがてお輿に乗せ申し上げ、駿河を目指して上られたのは、不思議な成り行きであった。
その時、姫君は仰せになるには「のう、いかに旅のお殿様、恥ずかしながら、私は今お産をいたした様子については、改めて申し上げましょう。この所へ尋ねてくる者があれば、形見を添えて捨て置き申すとも、かくも仰せに従い申し上げましょう」と、幼子を取り上げ、「ああ、いたいけな幼子よ。果報少なく捨てられるとしても、命さえながらえれば、また巡り会えることもあろう」と、白露のような（はかない命の）これを形見に残しましょうと、母君よりいただいた唐の鏡を取り出し、二つに割り、その裏に一首書いた。

国の女に位まされよ

姫君（の形見と幼子）は袱紗に包まれ、薄の上に置かれた。泣く泣く立ち去られた。さて、形見の品を取り持たせ、国主と共に駿河へ上られた。かくて太夫はようやく水を求め、元の所に帰り見ると、姫君はいらっしゃらない。「さては早変わりの業か」と、深く涙をせきあえなかった。
英語訳
"...I came all the way down to the east for the very purpose of finding such a woman as this. How could I possibly leave her behind?" And so he had her placed in his palanquin and set off toward Suruga Province — a truly mysterious turn of events.
At that moment, the princess spoke: "Now then, dear lord traveler — though it shames me to say so — regarding the fact that I have just given birth, I shall explain further in due course. Should anyone come searching for me at this place, please leave the child behind with a keepsake. Even so, I shall obey your command." She then picked up the infant and said, "Oh, what a pitifully young child. Even if you are to be left behind with little fortune, if only your life is preserved, we may meet again someday." Like the white dew (fleeting and ephemeral), she would leave this as a keepsake. She took out a Chinese mirror that had been given to her by her mother, broke it in two, and on the back wrote a poem:
*Tarachine no chichi to hitotsu ni sonawari te*
*Kuni no onna ni kurai masare yo*
(Growing up together with your father, may you rise to the highest rank among the women of this land.)
The princess's keepsake and the infant were wrapped in a *fukusa* cloth and placed upon pampas grass. Weeping, she departed. The keepsake items were taken along, and she traveled with the provincial lord up to Suruga. Meanwhile, the retainer Tayū had finally found water and returned to the spot, only to find that the princess was no longer there. "Then was it the work of some sudden transformation?" he thought, and could not hold back his deep, flowing tears.
