とうのゑせ物にて我におとらぬ悪とう共四五人抱
おしこみごうとう明ケ暮酒ゑんに身もゆたね
けるゆへに世の人しやけん長者と申けるされハ
長者れいの悪とう召よせ酒ゑん中はの所へ
太夫門をたゝき宿かし給へと申ける長者
聞何者なるそ見て参レと申はしり出
一目見るよりあつはれうつくしき女かなと
内に入長者にかくと申長者は此由聞より
内に入レ能キ女ならハ我か妻にせんそれ〳〵と
申太夫よろこひ内ニ入長者姫君を見より
あつはれうつくしき女かなおさへて女房に
せはやとおもひいかに旅人其女性はそなたの
娘と見へたり何国いか成方へ御通りそ我妻は
いまた定ル妻なけれは我にくれ給へとそ申ける
太夫聞是は忝シさりなから此女性はそれかしか
主君にて候か此国の国主の北の御かたこそ母
君にてましますかさるしさいの候て生レて母
君に別レみなし子と成我いたわしくそんし

盗人のにせ者で、我に劣らぬ悪党ども四、五人を抱え、押し込み強盗を明け暮れ、酒宴に身も委ねていたため、世の人は「しゃけん長者」と申していた。されば長者は例の悪党を召し寄せ、酒宴の最中のところへ太夫が門を叩き「宿をお貸しください」と申した。長者は聞いて「何者であるか見て参れ」と申し、家来が走り出て一目見るより「ああ美しい女性だな」と内に入り長者にこのように申した。長者はこの由を聞くより「内に入れよ。よい女ならば我が妻にしよう。それそれ」と申した。太夫は喜んで内に入った。長者が姫君を見るより「ああ美しい女性だな。押さえて女房にしてしまおう」と思い、「いかに旅人よ、その女性はそなたの娘と見えるが、何国のいかなる方へご通行か。我が妻はまだ定まった妻がないので、我にくれよ」とそう申した。太夫は聞いて「これは恐れ多いこと。さりながらこの女性はそれがしの主君にて候。この国の国主の北の方こそ母君でいらっしゃる。さるしさいがあって生まれて母君に別れ、みなし子となり、我がいたわしく存じ」
英語訳
This man was a thief and impostor who kept four or five villains no less evil than himself, engaging in burglary and robbery day and night, and indulging in drinking parties. For this reason, the people of the world called him "Shaken Chōja" (the wealthy scoundrel). So this wealthy man summoned his usual band of villains, and while they were in the midst of a drinking party, the retainer knocked on the gate asking, "Please give us lodging." The wealthy man heard this and said, "See who it is and report back." A servant ran out, and upon first sight exclaimed, "Ah, what a beautiful woman!" He went inside and reported thus to the wealthy man. Upon hearing this, the wealthy man said, "Bring them inside. If she is a good woman, I shall make her my wife. Do it at once." The retainer was pleased and entered inside. When the wealthy man saw the princess, he thought, "Ah, what a beautiful woman! I shall seize her and make her my wife," and said, "Ho there, traveler! That woman appears to be your daughter. From what province and to what destination are you traveling? I do not yet have a settled wife, so give her to me." The retainer heard this and replied, "This is most presumptuous. However, this woman is my lord. The northern consort of this province's lord is her mother. Due to certain circumstances, she was separated from her mother at birth and became an orphan, and I pity her greatly."
