遊し一首の御歌にかく斗
聞初し日より心の通ふかな
人ニはきかて身をまいりつゝ
とか様に被遣けれは長者開りて拝し返事は恐〻
取物もとりあへす頓而出仕被成ける国主御覧じ
いかにや長者都よりはる〳〵下候こと別の子細に候はす
みめ能姫を持給ふよし我恋請ケン其ためにはる
〳〵来り候と仰ける有長者承ニハ難有仰かなや
すき程の御事也さりなから今少御待人上へを
いかにと申に御国の御勘定も御座有へき所拵へ可キ
申とありけれは国主実もと思召然らは先御帰り
あれと仰ける長者は宿所へ帰り女房にかくと
語給へ夫婦なのめに思召弥姫君をいつきかしつき
給ひける扨湯殿をたて湯をひかせ申さんと母君
御入候而こなたゑ御入候へと曰へ共姫君はつや〳〵物
をもの給わすはゝ君ふしきに思召湯殿ゟ御上り
いかにや姫聞給へそなたの行末を思召長者は数【「数々」「数多」の意か】
の宝を尽シはんしやうをすゑ御座所を立垣には
現代語訳
送った一首の御歌にこのように詠まれていた。
聞き初めしその日より心の通うことよ
人には聞かせず身を任せつつ
このように送られたので、長者は開いて拝し、返事は恐れ多いことですが、取る物も取り敢えず、すぐにお仕えしに参上いたします、ということであった。国主がご覧になって、
「いかがであるか、長者よ。都よりはるばる下ってきたのは、別の理由ではない。美しい姫をお持ちであると聞く。我がものにしたいと思う。そのためにはるばる来たのだ」
と仰られた。長者が承るには、ありがたい仰せではあるが、容易なことである。しかしながら、今少しお待ちください。人を都へ
いかがかと申すに、御国の御勘定もございましょうし、準備すべきところもございます、ということであった。国主も、なるほどと思われ、それならばまず御帰りあれ、と仰られた。長者は宿所へ帰り、女房にこのように語られた。夫婦はなみなみならず思われ、いよいよ姫君を大切にお世話申し上げられた。さて、湯殿を建てて湯を沸かして差し上げましょうと、母君がお入りになって、「こちらへお入りください」と言われても、姫君は全く物も仰らない。母君は不思議に思われ、湯殿からお上がりになって、
「いかがですか、姫よ、お聞きください。そなたの行く末を思って、長者は数多の宝を尽くし、飯匙を据え、お座所を建て、垣には

The poem that was sent contained these verses:
Since the day I first heard of you, our hearts have been connected
Without telling others, I devote myself to you
Having received this, the lord opened and read it respectfully. His reply was: "Though I am deeply honored, I will take nothing with me but will immediately come to serve you." When the provincial lord saw this,
"How is it, elder? You have come all this way down from the capital for no other reason than this. I hear you have a beautiful daughter. I wish to make her mine. That is why I have come all this way."
So he spoke. When the elder heard this, he thought it was indeed an honored request, though it was a simple matter. However, he said, "Please wait just a little longer. We must send someone to the capital
to inquire how things stand, for there will be accounts to settle with the province and preparations to be made." The provincial lord thought this reasonable and said, "Then first return home." The elder returned to his lodging and told his wife about this. The couple thought seriously about it and treated the princess with even greater care. Now, when they built a bath house and heated water, and the mother entered and said "Please come in here," the princess would not speak at all. The mother found this strange and, coming out of the bath house, said:
