金くわをかけ戸にはすいせうをつらね錦のしとね
を敷極楽浄土もかくやらん山海の珍物調へ
国土の菓子を集￣メ御ざつしやうをかまへ国主を
申入へきと心をつくし給ふ其甲ひ【「甲斐」の意か】もなく
何とて物をもの給わぬそと自姫君の御手を
取り湯殿へ入させ給へとされとも御湯浴をぬかせ
給わすかなしけ成御風せいにてかたわきにそ
はみ給ふ母君申ける様は国主御入候はす玉さかに
相見事も候まゝこなたへよらせ給へやと御手を引
よせ見給ふにれいならすおもやせ額の髪もそゝけ
古しへの御姿はましまさす母上不思議に思召つ
く〳〵と見給うに御胸の内青み乳首も黒￣ク見
へさせ給ふ事懐躰の姿成り母君□姫君には兎角の
仰もなくて急￣キ湯殿ゟ上り長者に此由を御物語
被成夫婦あきれてなくより外の事そなししはらく
有て長者仰ける様は明後こと申たりいかゝはせん
是は夢かうつゝかと夫婦もろ共なけきかなしみ給ひ
しは実難儀とそ見へにけり長者仰けるは兎角此分￣ン

金の花飾りをかけ、戸には水晶を連ね、錦の褥を敷き、極楽浄土もかくやと思われるほどで、山海の珍しい品々を調え、国中の菓子を集め、御座所を整えて国主をお迎え申し上げようと、心を尽くしてくださっているのです。その甲斐もなく、何故に物もおっしゃらないのですか」
と言いながら、自ら姫君のお手を取り、湯殿へお入れ申し上げようとされたが、それでも御湯浴みをなさろうとしない。悲しそうなお顔つきで、かたわらにそのままいらっしゃる。母君がおっしゃるには、「国主がいらっしゃらぬうちに、ほどよいうちにお会いすることもあるでしょうから、こちらへおいでください」と、お手を引き寄せて御覧になると、様子がただならない。お痩せになられ、額の髪も乱れ、昔のお姿ではいらっしゃらない。母上が不思議に思われ、つくづくと御覧になると、御胸の内が青み、乳首も黒く見えなさっている。それは懐胎のお姿であった。母君は姫君に何とも仰らず、急いで湯殿から上がり、長者にこのことをお話しになった。夫婦は呆れて、泣くよりほかのことはなかった。しばらく経って長者が仰るには、「明け後ろのこととは申したものの、いかがすべきか。これは夢か現か」と、夫婦ともに嘆き悲しまれたのは、まことに難儀なことと見えた。長者が仰るには、「とにかくこのままでは

So saying, she herself took the princess by the hand and tried to lead her into the bath house. Yet even so, the princess would not bathe. With a sorrowful expression, she remained there at the side. The mother said, "Before the provincial lord arrives, while there is still time, you should meet with him — please come this way," and drawing her hand close, examined her. The princess's appearance was most unusual. She had grown thin, the hair at her brow was disheveled, and she was no longer as she had been before. The mother looked at her with deep concern and, studying her carefully, noticed that the skin of her chest had turned bluish and her nipples appeared darkened. This was unmistakably the appearance of a woman with child. The mother said nothing to the princess and, hurrying out of the bath house, went to tell the elder what she had seen. The couple was utterly stunned and could do nothing but weep. After a while, the elder said: "Though I had spoken of what was to come, what are we to do now? Is this a dream or reality?"
