せんたんと言鞍を掛￣ケ姫君の方へ遣￣スとて今日
よりして親持たるとおもふまし此馬に乗
何方へ成リ共行へし此国に有と聞なら命を
取ぞといかり給ふ母上はひとり姫の事なれは
心の内にはいかはかり御名残おしく消入様に
思召とも父のいかりのつよけれは御きやうくわん
まてもなく見ぬ国しらぬ里へ行なれは此世
の契￣リも今斗と御泪の隙よりもかたみに見よ
とて八尺の掛帯五尺のかつら唐のかゝみ
かうかい金の骨白銀の地の扇七本こかね作￣リの
十二の手箱十二壱重の御小袖其外の宝物
参らせらる姫君あまりのかなしさに今迄は
さりとては母上を頼におもひしに其かいも
なく御形見を給事のかなしさよと声もおし
ます泣給ふ女房達もろともに是かかきりか
なさけなやと伏シしつみてぞなき給ふ父の

栴檀という鞍を掛けて姫君のもとへ遣わし、「今日よりして親があると思うな。この馬に乗ってどこへでも行け。この国にいると聞いたなら命を取るぞ」と怒った。母上はひとり姫のことを思い、心の内にはいかほど名残惜しく、気が遠くなるほど思われても、父の怒りが強いため、お別れの言葉をかけることさえできないまま、見知らぬ国、知らぬ里へ行くのだから、この世の縁もこれまでと、お涙の合間から「互いに見よ」とて、八尺の掛け帯、五尺の鬘（かつら）、唐の鏡、笄（こうがい）、金の骨に白銀の地の扇七本、黄金作りの十二の手箱、十二ひとえの御小袖、その他の宝物をお贈りになった。姫君はあまりの悲しさに、「今まではそれでも母上を頼りに思っておりましたのに、その甲斐もなく、形見をいただくことの悲しさよ」と声も惜しまず泣かれた。女房たちもともに「これが最後か、情けないことよ」と伏し沈んで泣いた。父の方から「遅くなってはよくないからはやく出よ」と使いが立てられたので、力及ばず出立された。命のある内に

[They] saddled the horse called Sendan and sent it to the princess, saying, "From this day forth, do not think you have parents. Ride this horse and go wherever you will. If I hear that you remain in this land, I will take your life," and he was greatly angered. The mother, alone in her grief for the princess, felt how deeply she would miss her and how her heart nearly fainted with sorrow, yet because the father's anger was so fierce, she could not even offer a word of farewell. Since the princess was to depart for unknown countries and unfamiliar villages, and their bond in this world would end here, the mother, through her tears and saying "let us each keep this as a memento," presented her with: a sash of eight shaku in length, a wig of five shaku, a Chinese mirror, ornamental hairpins, seven fans with golden ribs and silver ground, twelve jeweled dressing boxes of golden make, twelve layers of small robes, and other treasures. The princess, overcome with grief, wept without restraint, saying, "Until now I had taken comfort in relying upon you, my mother, yet even that comfort is to be denied me—how sorrowful it is to receive these as mementos." The ladies-in-waiting also wept together, prostrating themselves and crying, "Is this truly the last farewell? How heartless!"
