現代語訳
いつの頃だったか、深川の万年橋に万右衛門という名の鰻を商売にしている親父がいた。美しい娘を一人持っていたが、もとより家が貧しく暮らしに困っていたので、吉原の禿（かむろ）に売ってしまった。けれども、さすがに親子の情で、明け暮れ心配し続けていた。
万右衛門はつくづくと考えてみると、「どんなにしつけられた商売とはいえ、日々たくさんの魚の命を取って、罪の程が恐ろしい」と思った。そこで商売の心構えを変えて、放し亀、放し鰻を買って永代橋のたもとへ出て、「放し亀、放し鰻」と節をつけて浄瑠璃に語りながら商売をしたところ、格別に流行った。
【男】
放さない鰻本（すっぽん）は値段が高いな。この鰻は食用には向かないな。
【老女】
今日は仏の日だから、一匹放しましょう。

Some time ago, at Mannenbashi bridge in Fukagawa, there lived an old man named Man'emon who made his living selling eels. He had one beautiful daughter, but his family was poor and struggling financially, so he sold her to become a kamuro (child attendant) in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter. However, due to natural parental affection, he worried about her day and night.
Man'emon reflected deeply and thought, "No matter how well-established this business may be, taking the lives of so many fish daily makes me fear the extent of my sins." So he changed his business approach and began buying turtles and eels to release them. He would go to the foot of Eitaibashi bridge and sell them while chanting "Release turtles! Release eels!" in the style of joruri narrative, and this business became extraordinarily popular.

The turtle-pons (soft-shell turtles) that aren't released are expensive. These eels aren't suitable for eating.
