現代語訳
昔より猿の形を打ち笑うに思っていたが、とんと了見違いであった。猿は駆け落ちしてしまい、蟹はいよいよ口惜しく思い、方々と尋ね歩くけれども、とかく人よりは横に歩く故に、らちが明かない。誰の心も同じこと、まず江戸と心がけ、鰻の所へ尋ね着いた。

まずは入って、下の足を洗いなさい。
英語訳
Since ancient times, [the crab] had thought to mock the monkey's form, but this was completely a misjudgment. The monkey had eloped and fled, and the crab felt increasingly frustrated. Though he searched here and there, since he inevitably walks sideways rather than straight like humans, he made no progress. Everyone's heart feels the same - thinking "Edo first," he finally arrived at the eel's place.
