現代語訳
鰻は深川の木場にきれいな住まいで、素封家の口も利く。元はぬらりくらりとしたものであったが、深川で用いられ、美味いものの親方となった。蟹が尋ねて来た故、ぐっと飲み込み、万年橋にいる亀どもも心安ければ知らせてやり、蟹の一部始終を聞き、「何の欠け図か構わぬ。薄焼きねや牛の糞まで、そのように背に負ったに違いない事に、猿には意趣もあり、親父の瘤が今でも羊羹には痛みます。是非とも敵を討とう」と力を添える。
【蟹】
私は少し飲むと赤くなりますが、定めて亀印は今でも赤いであろう。きついもので、個性です。

英語訳
The eel lived in a beautiful residence at the lumber yard in Fukagawa and could speak with the wealthy merchants. Originally he was slippery and evasive, but being employed in Fukagawa, he became a master of delicious things. Since the crab had come to visit, he gulped it down, and the turtles at Mannen Bridge being familiar friends, he informed them. After hearing the crab's whole story from beginning to end, [the eel said] "What's the problem? Even thin pancakes or cow dung - surely [the monkey] carried such things on his back. There is also a grudge against that monkey, and father's tumor still pains in the yokan to this day. By all means, let us help you take revenge," lending his strength.
【Crab】
I turn red when I drink a little, but surely the turtle's mark is still red even now. It's strong stuff - that's my character.
