【猿】

現代語訳
猿は海月の知らせに驚き、女房と娘三人を連れて駆け落ちすることにした。何の役にも立たないものまで一風呂敷に包んだ。これを猿引き道具というのである。駆け落ちして、故郷の所では統制も厳しくなり、とかく江戸がよかろうと心づき、それぞれという当てもなしに故郷を立ち出た。
【猿の夫婦】
疲れたら清水でも飲みなさい。
親子三人で江戸へ。落ち着きもしない、奉行の注意で尋ねて来る困った者ではない。見つけられては首仕舞いである。昔も猿の例がある。佐次平という者が四国を巡って猿となった。もし猿として巡ったならば人にもなろうかと思い、女房に娘を預け、順礼となって出て行ったのは哀れである。

英語訳
The monkey was alarmed by the jellyfish's warning and decided to elope with his wife and three daughters. He packed even useless things into one furoshiki cloth bundle. This is called "monkey showman's equipment." After eloping, the controls in his hometown became strict, so he thought that Edo would be better after all. Without any particular destination in mind, he left his hometown.

When you get tired, drink some spring water.
The family of three headed to Edo. Without settling down properly - these weren't troublesome people being sought by the magistrate's attention. If they were discovered, it would mean their end. There was a precedent with monkeys in the past. A man called Sajihei traveled around Shikoku and became a monkey. Thinking that if he traveled as a monkey he might become human again, he left his daughter with his wife and departed as a pilgrim - how pitiful this was.
