現代語訳
蟹は三人寄っても文殊の知恵も出ず。猿の尻に牛蒡と言えば、まず嫌いと思い、焼く事は色々と議論しても、とんと分からず。生の奴を一本持ち、猿が門口に待ちかけていれば、大勢の子供が見つけて「神様の家に蟹が牛蒡を挟んだ」と囃し立てた。
それを後に「蟹が牛蒡を挟んだ」と言えば、味に毒、口の悪いように聞こえるけれども、真実は神様に見ろとて知らせた事なり。そうあり、そうなものなり。

Even with three crabs together, no wisdom of Manjushri emerged. When told "burdock root for the monkey's bottom," they first thought it distasteful, and though they debated various ways of roasting it, they understood nothing at all. Taking a raw one, when the crab waited at the monkey's gate, many children spotted him and chanted, "At the god's house, a crab has pinched a burdock root!"
Later, when people say "a crab pinched a burdock root," it sounds like poisonous gossip or malicious talk, but the truth is that it was done to inform the gods - let them see! That's how it was, that's how it should be.
