現代語訳
万事の事、推すに推されぬもの。猿は四国を回りて人となり、察するところ、女房・娘をも尋ねるはずなれども、蟹が様子を聞き、打ち捨て、姿をやつし、塩辛声になれども少し唸り、十分偉い気で芸者になりまる太夫と付く、その気であるまいが。
猿まる太夫もおかしし、蓼食う虫も好き好き、芸が良くて忙しいもあり、芸が悪くても面白いで流行るもあり。美しいも不器用な様も売れる理屈と同じ事なり。

In all matters, there are things that cannot be pushed when one tries to push them. The monkey traveled around Shikoku and became human. One would assume he would search for his wife and daughter, but hearing about the crab's situation, he abandoned them, disguised his appearance, and though his voice became hoarse like salted fish, he groaned a little and with quite an arrogant attitude became a male entertainer called Maru-dayū. Though that may not have been his intention.
This monkey Maru-dayū is also amusing. As they say, "even bugs that eat knotweed have their preferences" - some become busy because their skills are good, others become popular even with poor skills because they're entertaining. The logic is the same whether one is beautiful or clumsy - both can sell.
