さるはよふすをきゝだし今ではかにがせわをすると
いふ事きゝ大やきもちにてぐつとふんごみはらを

つもりかにがさるにごぼうをもつて
かたきをうとふといふはこゝろいちがい

現代語訳
猿は様子を聞き出し、今では蟹が世話をするということを聞き、大焼きもちにてぐっと踏ん込み腹を立て、顔にも血が上がり、猿の目もつり上がった。少し手前も今は粋な人の気になり、良い幸いにして蟹に追いつけるつもりで、蟹が猿に牛蒡を持って敵を討とうというのは心違い。昔もこういう難しい事を知りといううそも真っ赤な嘘という。猿は牛蒡の尻、臨機を焼くという、飽きた女房を蟹に追いつける心、猿の尻は真っ赤いな。牛蒡焼いて追いつけろ。この理屈はこれでさらりと分かりしなり。
【猿】
俺の女房を猿というては分からぬゆえ、離縁するぞ。
蟹は気の毒、借りて頭をかけば人の手かと思いて挟まれる。
〽粋な男になったと思って大平楽、いけすかねえ。
英語訳
The monkey found out about the situation and heard that the crab was now taking care of [his wife]. In great jealousy, he stomped forward angrily, his face flushed red, and his monkey eyes became fierce. The monkey himself now fancies himself a sophisticated man, and thinking it would be good fortune to catch up with the crab. The idea that the crab would take a burdock root to strike back at the monkey is misguided. Even in the past, such complicated matters were known to be lies - complete lies. The monkey's bottom, seizing the opportunity... his plan to foist his tiresome wife onto the crab - the monkey's bottom is bright red indeed. Roast the burdock and chase after him! This logic becomes clear as crystal.

Since you won't understand if I call my wife a monkey, I shall divorce her!
The poor crab, when someone borrows [something] and scratches his head, thinking it's a person's hand, gets pinched.
