すなとりを業とする者にてなし農業の休日なれはたゝにあらん
よりはとてせし也とさらは人に頼まれなはうちてんやと問へはしか
はあらすたのまれまいとせても魚取得ぬ時便なけれはといふ秋涼風
たちてこゝの川ふち浅き処飼つけしてあみを下さはあまたの魚を
得る事侍り飼つけにはひえといふ物をよくゑさせて夕つかた
浅瀬に蒔置夜に入て懸のよりくるをうかゝひてあみを下に
せいご鯰ふなの類数かきりなく得ると也これもそれうるもの
もあり又おのか食に充るもの有人にたのまることはたま〳〵也といふ
鮫網は江戸の網の如く糸細きものにては喰破る故目をあらく
ふとき糸にておのか料に作るといふ七にご鮒のあみは常のほそ

半田稲荷の社の南側に出この《見せ消ち：を｜処カ》東葛西領にて三万石の場
所也と云社の前あけの玉垣瓦ふきの門あり社頭は東にむかひ
て拝殿広さ六間に三間幣殿三間斗本社二間はかりにや
拝殿《見せ消ち：承塵｜美麗カ》に墨画の龍をゑかく筆勢墨色いとめてたし
よく見れは相知ける香取栄広か書きし也けり牧渓の図に
現代語訳
これは砂採りを業とする者ではなく、農業の休日なので、ただ何もしないよりはと思ってしたのだという。それでは人に頼まれたら売ってくれるのかと問うと、そうではなく、頼まれても魚が獲れない時は都合が悪いからだという。秋の涼風が立って、ここの川淵の浅い所に餌付けをして網を下ろすと、たくさんの魚を獲ることがある。餌付けには稗という物をよく餌として与えて、夕方頃に浅瀬に蒔いておき、夜になって魚が寄ってくるのを狙って網を下ろす。鱸、鯰、鮒の類を数限りなく獲るという。これもそれを売る者もあり、また自分の食事に充てる者もある。人に頼まれることは時々あるという。
鮫用の網は江戸の網のように糸の細いものでは食い破ってしまうので、目を粗く太い糸で自分用に作るという。鱸や鮒の網は普通の細い糸で作ると言った。
半里ほど畦道を伝って行き、後ろを振り返ると夕顔観音や富士浅間の森がそれぞれ遥かに見える。なお少し行って半田稲荷の社の南側に出た。この辺りは東葛西領で三万石の場所だという。社の前には朱塗りの玉垣と瓦葺きの門がある。社頭は東に向かい、拝殿の広さは六間×三間、幣殿は三間ほど、本社は二間ほどだろうか。拝殿には墨画の龍が描かれており、筆勢も墨色もとても見事である。よく見ると、知り合いの香取栄広が書いたものであった。牧渓の図に

This man was not someone who made sand collection his profession, but since it was a day off from farming, he did it rather than doing nothing. When I asked if he would sell fish if people requested it, he said no, because even if people asked, it would be inconvenient when he couldn't catch fish. When the cool autumn wind rises, he baits the shallow parts of the riverbank here and lowers nets to catch many fish. For bait, he uses something called hie (barnyard millet), feeding it well as bait, scattering it in the shallows around evening, and when night falls, he targets the fish that come gathering and lowers his nets. He catches countless bass, catfish, carp and similar fish. Some people sell these, while others use them for their own meals. Being asked by people happens occasionally, he said.
For shark nets, unlike Edo nets which use fine thread, he makes his own with coarse mesh using thick thread because fine thread gets bitten through. For bass and carp nets, he said he uses ordinary fine thread.
After walking about half a ri along the ridge paths and looking back, I could see the Yūgao Kannon and the Fuji Asama forest in the distance. Walking a little further, I came out on the south side of Handa Inari shrine. This area is said to be part of Higashi Kasai domain, worth 30,000 koku. In front of the shrine there are vermillion-lacquered sacred fences and a tile-roofed gate. The shrine faces east, with a worship hall measuring six ken by three ken, an offering hall of about three ken, and the main shrine of about two ken. In the worship hall, a dragon is painted in ink wash, with very admirable brushwork and ink tones. Looking closely, I recognized it as the work of my acquaintance Katori Eikō.
