丁未（ことし）春（はる）信州（しんしう）善光寺（よしみつでら）如来（によらい）の開帳（かいせう）ましますに
より関東（くはんとう）関西（くはんさい）老若男女（ろうにやくなんによ）現当（けんとう）の善因（ぜんこん）をむ
すばんため日夜（にちや）の参詣（さんけい）おびたゝしく堂内（とうない）
の通夜（つや）はもとより宿坊（しゆくぼう）旅宿（りよしゆく）五百七百の人
をやどせしとなん爰（こゝ）に我国人（わがくにびと）三月（やよい）の末（すへ）頃｜彼（かの）
地（ち）に至（いた）り如来（によらい）を礼拝（らいはい）し有（あり）がたさの余りに

**善光寺夢物語**
丁未（ひのとひつじ）の年〔すなわち弘化四年〕の春、信州・善光寺の如来様の御開帳がおこなわれていたため、関東・関西の老若男女が、現世・来世の善き縁を結ぼうと、昼夜を問わず参詣する人が夥しく、堂内での通夜はもとより、宿坊・旅宿にも五百・七百人をも泊め入れたとのことである。そこで、我が国のある人〔語り手〕が三月の末頃、かの地に赴き如来様を礼拝し、そのありがたさのあまりに、
堂の中で通夜をしていたところ、戌の刻（午後八時頃）を過ぎた頃のこと、思わずうとうとしようとした折に、一人の尊いお坊様が我が肩を押さえておっしゃるには、「汝、称名を怠るべからず。今、この土地に程なく異変があるだろう。ああ、悲しいことよ。」
英語訳
**The Dream Tale of Zenkōji**
In the spring of the year *Hinoto-Hitsuji* [the cyclical year corresponding to Kōka 4, 1847], a special viewing of the sacred image (*kaichō*) of the Tathāgata at Zenkōji Temple in Shinshū Province was being held. People of all ages and both sexes, from the Kantō and Kansai regions alike, came in great numbers, day and night, to make their pilgrimages, seeking to forge bonds of good karma for both this life and the next. Not only was the practice of overnight vigil within the main hall in full swing, but the temple lodgings and travellers' inns are said to have accommodated as many as five hundred to seven hundred guests at a time.
It was around the end of the third month that a certain person from our land [the narrator] journeyed to that place, paid reverence to the Tathāgata, and, overwhelmed by the profound sense of grace and gratitude,
held an overnight vigil within the hall. It was past the Hour of the Dog [around 8 o'clock in the evening] when, just as the narrator was about to inadvertently drift off to sleep, a single venerable monk pressed upon the narrator's shoulder and spoke these words: "You must not neglect the recitation of the sacred name. Before long, a great calamity shall befall this land. How grievous — how truly grievous this is."
