濁世(しよくせ)の人間(にんけん)此難(このなん)をのがるゝもの稀(まれ)なり聊(いさゝか)信者(しんじや) 有(あり)といへども前世(せんせ)の因(いん)を逃(のが)れがたしはる〳〵 来(きた)り此所(このところ)に落命者(おはらんもの)少(すくな)からず然(しかれ)共 弥陀(みた)の本願(ほんくわん) 普(あまねく)して悉(こと〳〵)く亡者(もうじや)得解(とくだつ)仏果(ぶつくわ)を得(え)せしむべし 疑(うたか)ふ心(こゝろ)有べからず見よ〳〵今(いま)にと曰(のたま)ふと思へは 忽(たちまち)天地震動(てんちしんとう)し轟音(とゝろくおと)すさまじ既(すて)に此堂(このどう)も ゆり崩るゝかと思ひければ彼者(かのもの)御僧(おんそう)の袂(たもと)に すがりて堂前(とうぜん)にあゆみ 三衣(さんえ)の袖(そで)のすきより四方(よも) のありさまを見渡(みわた)す内(うち) 又(また)大(おほい)に震(ふる)ひしかば目(もく)ぜんに 坊舎(ほうしや)をはじめ民家(みんか)旅宿(たひやと) 残(のこ)らず将棋(せうぎ)倒(たを)しに悉(こと〳〵)く 震(ふるひ)崩(くづ)せは是(これ)が為(ため)に押(おし)に

現代語訳

濁世の人間がこの難を逃れるものは稀である。たとえ多少の信心ある者であっても、前世の因縁から逃れることは難しく、遠くよりここまで来て、この地で命を落とす者も少なくはない。しかれども、阿弥陀如来の本願は広く行き渡り、すべての亡者は解脱を得て、仏果を得ることができるであろう。疑う心を持ってはならぬ。見よ、見よ、今にも——」とおっしゃったと思ったその瞬間、たちまち天地が震動し、轟くような凄まじい音が響いた。既にこの堂も揺れ崩れるかと思われたので、かの者(語り手)はお坊様の袂(たもと)に すがりつき、堂の前へと歩み出た。三衣(僧衣)の袖の隙間から四方のありさまを見渡していると、また大きく揺れたので、目の前に、坊舎をはじめ、民家・旅宿が残らず将棋倒しに、ことごとく揺れ崩れ、そのために押しつぶされ——

英語訳

Those living in this defiled world who can escape this calamity are few indeed. Even those who possess some degree of faith cannot easily escape the karmic bonds of their previous lives; not a few of those who have journeyed from afar to this place shall meet their end here. Nevertheless, the Original Vow of Amida Buddha extends universally to all, and every departed soul shall attain liberation and achieve Buddhahood without fail. You must harbour no doubt in your heart. Look — look — it is happening now—" No sooner had the monk spoken these words than the heavens and earth shook violently, and a tremendous, thunderous roar resounded all around. It seemed as though even this very hall would be shaken apart and crumble. The narrator clung to the sleeve of the venerable monk's robe and made their way out to the front of the hall. Peering through the gaps in the folds of the monk's three-piece vestments, the narrator looked out at the scene in all directions. When another great tremor struck, before their very eyes, the temple sub-buildings, private homes, and travellers' inns toppled one after another like a row of falling *shōgi* pieces, crumbling utterly — and as a result, people were crushed beneath the ruins—
