(夫を)探し出して見るとはいえ、助ける手立てもなかなかなく、ただいたずらに手間取っているうちに、すでに火はどんどん燃え広がってきて、もはやこの世の別れであると観念せよ、と女房に告げ、旅差しを持って念仏とともに(妻の)黒髪を引き切り、血の涙ながらこれを(故郷の)国への土産として——また、押し潰されてはいないが、物の隙間に身はあれど、箱に入った鼠のように逃げ出す道もなく、そのまま火中に死んだ人も多かったであろうが、その苦しみは押しつぶされる苦しみにも増るであろう。親子三人、ようようと——母の片足がくじけているのを助け出して、さらにまた父を助けようと走ってきて、元の場所に入り見れば、父の片腕が挟まれていて、どうにかしようとしても抜けないので、「この腕を切り放せ」と親は焦るけれども、子の身としてどうして刃を——

— though he had managed to find her, there was no ready means of freeing her, and as he struggled helplessly, the flames spread ever closer and faster. Realizing this was to be their final parting in this world, he urged his wife to resign herself to her fate. Their suffering must have surpassed even that of those crushed beneath the rubble.
