食事（しよくし）のなすべき物（もの）もなく休（やすら）ふべき宿（やと）とてなければ
野（の）にふし道（みち）に夜（よ）を明すよろめき歩行（ありく）有（あり）さまは
餓鬼道（がきどう）にひとしかるべし其（その）折節（をりふし）に漸（やうや）く麤食（そじき）に有付（ありつき）
得（え）て其味（そのあぢは）ひ甘露（かんろ）の如くなるべしされば命（めい）は食（しよく）に

食事として口にできるものもなく、休める宿とてなければ、野に臥し、道に夜を明かし、よろめきながら歩き回るその有り様は、餓鬼道に等しかるべし。その折節に、ようやく粗食にありついて、その味わいは甘露の如くに感じられるであろう。されば命は食にあり、この時ほど食のありがたさを尊く思うべきことはない。また、はるか彼方を見渡せば、山際にある村里に、山上より巌石が雪崩れ落ち、家々の上に落ちたため、人も家も粉のごとく砕かれた。さらに大きく揺れ続けたため、またたく間に大山が一時に押し崩れ、山下の数か所の村里の百姓たちが、たちまち土中に押し埋められてしまい、それらの場所では一人も残らず助からなかったという有り様は、無残というも言葉が足りないほどである。信濃第一の大川に、崩れた山が流れを堰き止めると、川の水は川上の四方へ溢れ出し、村里の数か所にたちまち洪水となり、次第に水は増して、家々も水底に沈んでしまった。人々は屋根に上り、樹木にしがみつき、助けを求めて声を限りに叫んだけれども、誰が助けに来ようか——

There was nothing to eat, no inn where one might rest — they lay down in the fields, spent the night on the roadside, and stumbled about on foot, a sight no different from the realm of the hungry ghosts. Yet in those very moments of hardship, when at last they managed to obtain even the coarsest of food, its taste must have seemed like the sweetest nectar. Truly, life depends on food — never is its preciousness felt more keenly than at such a time. And gazing far into the distance, one could see that in the villages nestled at the foot of the mountains, great boulders and rocks had come cascading down from the heights above, crushing both people and homes to dust. As the earth continued to tremble violently, entire mountains collapsed all at once in the blink of an eye, and the farmers in the villages at the foot of those mountains — in several places — were instantly buried alive beneath the earth. That not a single person in those places survived — to call it pitiful is to fall short of the truth. In the greatest river of Shinano Province, where a collapsed mountain blocked the flow, the waters overflowed in all directions upstream, and several villages were suddenly inundated with floodwater. The waters rose steadily, and the houses disappeared beneath the surface. The people climbed onto their rooftops and clung to trees, crying out with all their voice for help — yet who was there to come to their aid —
