Even in times not so long past, the area was known as the "Thirty-Three Villages of Kasai," and even today, the local people's grass-cutting songs and the grinding songs of humble women still include the refrain "Thirty-Three Villages of Kasai." At present, the total has grown to one hundred and eighteen villages in the east and west combined, and this great flourishing makes the development plainly evident. It appears that the geographic advantages of this land are such that the number of villages will continue to increase further. Aoto Village 《Marginal note: Currently two villages: Omote-Aoto Village and Nishi-Aoto Village》 In this village there are traces of the achievements of Aoto Saemon Fujitsuna, and the site of his former residence remains. The local people call it "the ruins of an old castle," and some call it "the ruins of a palace." The story of how Fujitsuna, upon dropping a few coins into the Namerikawa River, spent several coins to hire people to retrieve the dropped coins, is widely known throughout the land, and whether this was truly to the benefit or detriment of the world is a matter for wise men to debate. The residence itself must have been a rather modest structure. Nearby, however, a place called "Kuruwa" (enclosure/bailey) remains, and there is also a place called "Jinya" (camp or administrative office), which are now residential plots for farmers, with residents known as "Kuruwa no Nanigashi Hyōe" and "Jinya no Nanigashi Uemon." When I inquired whether these might be descendants of retainers, I was told that was not the case. At the edge of the village there is a small vacant lot called the "Keibatsuba" (place of punishment), said to be the execution grounds from Saemon's time, and nearby, several dozen households of eta reside. These too are said to be descended from eta who settled there at that time. Because there are discrepancies in the characters used to write "Aoto," I inquired about this as well, and was told that the character "to" (砥) is difficult to write, and hard to read when written in an unskilled hand, so the easier character "to" (戸) is written instead. This explanation seems entirely reasonable. 【Wasabi grater】 In the home of a farmer named Mōuemon in this village, (relics or documents associated with Aoto Saemon are said to be preserved)…
