　日には大根をへきてさゝかき鯰をするもあり其大根
　を下すにはしからんか或人の曰せうぶはの形に【図】かくの
　こときの紋あり夫を山葵 下（ヲロ）しと称す図せる所の形より
　いひ出せしものならんといへり面白き説にて左もあるべし

　薬王山宝持院新儀真言宗本尊薬師如来開山
　弁勝法印天養二年の建立御朱印五石古き寺といふ
　此寺の御朱印地五石は斬〳〵【漸〳〵】地所一反半ならてはなく
　何国にても御朱印といへば高よりは田畑の多きこと定り

　の故ならんと聞しに実事委しからす無住の節に
　うせしことゝなん聞へぬ#1日月明らかならんと欲せと白雲

　夕顔之観音と称せるあり源氏夕顔の巻より名附し
　仏にや何にしても故あらんと立寄しに老樹数多生ひ
　茂りしん〳〵とせし村中にあしからぬ堂あり住僧も
　なく傍に少しき草庵あり里人に聞ば此所の名主の隠

現代語訳

日には大根を剥いてささがき鯰をする者もある。その大根をおろすのにこれを使うのではないだろうか。ある人が言うには、菖蒲葉の形に【図】このような紋があり、それを山葵おろしと称する。図に描かれた所の形から言い出したものだろうと言った。面白い説で、そうかもしれない。

この寺の御朱印地五石は、だんだんと地所一反半ほどしかなく、どこの国でも御朱印というものは、石高よりは田畑の多いことが決まりのようだと思っていたのに、この寺に限って地所が少ないのはどういう理由だろうかと聞いたところ、実際のところは詳しくはわからないが、無住の時期に失われたことだということを聞いた。日月が明らかであろうと思っても、白雲黒雲が覆ってしまってはどうしようもない。

On such days, some people peel daikon radish to make sasagaki namazu (julienned catfish). They might use this grater for grating that daikon. Someone said that there is a crest in the shape of iris leaves【with diagram】like this, which is called a wasabi grater. It was probably named after the shape depicted in the illustration. This is an interesting theory and may well be correct.

Yakuōzan Hōjiin Temple, Shingi Shingon sect, principal deity Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), founded by Benshō Hōin, established in the second year of Tenyō era (1145), temple stipend of 5 koku, said to be an ancient temple.

This temple's stipend land of 5 koku amounts to only about one and a half tan of land area. I had thought that everywhere, temple stipends meant more farmland relative to the koku rating, so I wondered why this temple alone had so little land. When I inquired, the details were unclear, but I heard that it was lost during a period when the temple had no resident priest. Even when the sun and moon wish to shine brightly, when white and black clouds cover them, nothing can be done.

There is what is called the Yūgao Kannon. Whether it is a Buddha named after the Yūgao chapter of the Tale of Genji, or whatever the case, there must be some reason, so I stopped by. Many old trees grow thickly, and in the quiet village there is a decent hall. There is no resident monk, and nearby there is a small hermitage. When I asked the villagers, they said this was the retreat of the local headman
