現代語訳

隅田村【墨田区】土地の人は「すま村」と呼んでいる。名前の由来となった隅田川は、この村より北で足立郡と葛飾郡の境界となっている。隅田川とはかなり離れた場所にあり、現在は埋まってしまって小さな流れしか残っていないが、どの村の土地の人も「古隅田川」と呼んでいるのは、当国の名所として古歌に詠まれた隅田川の真の跡であろう。『江戸砂子』には荒川を隅田川と記している。隅田村に沿って流れる川なので、この辺りで隅田川という名前が付いたのは無理からぬことと聞こえるが、里人の言うことを考慮すれば、古隅田川が真の跡と決定すべきである。【挿絵、地図】北方向中川足立郡葛飾郡水戸街道小菅村小谷野村隅田村木母寺古隅田川水戸橋小谷野橋中ノ橋綾瀬橋小菅御殿古川という千住へ出る道柳原村古隅田川荒川

Sumida Village [Sumida Ward] The local people call it "Suma Village." The Sumida River, from which the name derives, forms the boundary between Adachi District and Katsushika District north of this village. It is quite distant from the current Sumida River, and now it has been filled in with only a small stream remaining. However, the fact that people from all villages call it "Old Sumida River" suggests that this is the true site of the Sumida River that was celebrated as a famous place in our province and featured in ancient poems. The Edo Sunago records the Arakawa as the Sumida River. Since it is a river that flows along Sumida Village, it seems reasonable that the name Sumida River was attached in this area. However, considering what the local people say, we should conclude that the Old Sumida River is the true site.
