[The North American plains extend] from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes situated between the United States and British territories, and from these lakes onward to the Atlantic Ocean. This plain is said to measure 2,430,000 square ri. 〇 Although there are no particularly towering elevations across this vast land, it nonetheless forms the drainage basin of two of the world's greatest rivers. Namely, the Mississippi River, with its hundreds of tributaries, flows through this land, and the St. Lawrence River also flows through this plain by way of its expansive lakes. 〇 A slightly elevated tract of land lying to the north of Lake Superior serves as the watershed dividing these two great rivers. 〇 The central portion of this plain, together with the valleys of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, consists largely of flat grasslands. The native inhabitants call these "prairies." These prairies are divided into three types: the first is called the "叢原" (sōgen, brushy plain), which is overgrown with wild grasses and shrubs; the second is called the "燥原" (sōgen, dry plain), so named because it lacks gathering waters and marshes; the third is called the "湿原" (shitsugen, wet plain), which has an abundance of marshes and wetlands. 〇 Furthermore, the coastal land between the Allegheny Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean is also entirely a plain. Its width varies from place to place depending on how far the mountain range recedes from the coastline.
