現代語訳
艶二郎はちょうど寒い日の夕方に帰ってきたが、寒さでこごえて家に帰ってみると、床の間に三回忌用の喪服の小袖がかけてあるので不思議に思っていたところ、一間から父親の弥次右衛門と番頭の兵助が出てきて諫言する。
艶二郎は初めて世の中を悟り、本当の人となり、浮名（遊女）も男の悪い癖も封じて、ほかへ行く気もなく夫婦となった。もとより身代に不足もなく、末は繁盛に栄えた。
しかし一生の浮気の締めくくりに、今までの事を草双紙にして世間に広めたく思い、京伝に頼んで世上の浮気な人を教訓した。
若い時は血気がまだ定まらず、戒めることがいろいろあることを知らないが、すべて案じて考えるとみなこうしたものだ。恐ろしいことである。
【父親と番頭の台詞】
「とろくさいばかりまで身をやつした我々の工夫の狂言。これはきっと嗜みを直せ。悪い仲間ともうつきあうまいか。けちばかりではない、家の中に大不幸、こういう心意気のものがある。」
【艶二郎の台詞】
「私は大きに風邪をひきました。ここで焼きもちを焼かれて大難儀だから、妾もどこぞへ片づけましょう。」

Enjiro returned home on a particularly cold evening, and when he entered the house shivering from the cold, he found a white kimono for memorial services hanging in the alcove. Puzzled by this, his father Yajizaemon and the head clerk Hyosuke emerged from an inner room to admonish him.
For the first time, Enjiro came to understand the ways of the world and became a true person, giving up both courtesans and his bad habits with no desire to go elsewhere, and took a wife. Having sufficient family fortune, he prospered and flourished in the end.
However, as a final conclusion to his lifetime of philandering, he wished to spread his story to the world in the form of a popular book, and requested Kyoden to write it as a lesson for other libertines in society.
When young, one's passions are not yet settled and one does not know there are various things to be cautious about, but when one reflects on everything, this is how people are. It is indeed frightening.
